Who to support

Excuse my simplistic suggestion as I have no idea if it would work .. could £2 ( or more ) be added to every rod licence sold and donated back to the AT ( or another body depending on your views) as this would raise £1.8m in revenue based on 900,000 licences.
A fair sum for any organisation.

Kevin, the AT already get around £1m of funding from Angling Licence sales via the EA.

Join the AT at the very least.
Did that once & voiced my big concerns on otter releases years back, the main guy at the time said they don't see otters bring as they are, apex predators as a threat to our fishing....
I vowed to never sign up again after that response.
And Neil's Sanger's point above, is one I've heard about as well, so even the water companies have corrupted Angling Trust's purpose of existence.

These big water companies are happy anglers are divided, and they've wormed their way into the pockets of the Angling Trust, so unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a body that I can trust to represent us or the sport we care about.

That idea has been suggested several times by the Angling governing bodies (precursors to the AT). It is knocked back by the government every time - the usual excuse being it involves a change in legislation…..

It’s a good idea because it means every licence holder would have to contribute a bit to support the sport.

Another suggestion was a small tax on tackle - again rejected……

That would generate enough revenue to pay for some top draw lawyers, barristers etc that could do more than a little bit of window dressing, but government, defra, Ea etc would not want to have that sort of muscle to fight against! “I have a dream” TW.

With the number of licences sold that’s 900000 voices . Include other river users such as canoeists , swimmers and even the general public who actually care and you’re well over a million people. That’s over 5 times the number of our armed forces. Our own force to be reckoned with and listened to, or are we that apathetic ( I include myself in that) waiting for the day when the rivers are totally devoid of life, and fish specifies are consigned to the past ?
Apologies…Rant over.

Unfortunately, you are completely right. Anglers generally are an apathetic bunch.

One example; a guy I know owns a complex of lakes in the west London area. He absolutely hates anglers and has banned fishing on his waters. He says anglers won’t pay a decent ticket price, moan all the time, expect him to restock the lakes as soon as they blank and expect him to get up early every morning to shoot the cormorants…..

In contrast he organises open water swimming days and says that they are nice people. They pay good money (he makes more in one day of open water swimming than a season of angling) don’t make a mess and say ‘thank you’ when they leave……

Then there is the government who promise 11/2 million new houses without explaining how much they will spend on new water treatment plants to deal with the extra sewage………( and , yes, I know they ALL do this).
G.T.
