who makes Drennan tackle ?

No offence Jim but that post suggests that you really haven't got a clue about the fishing tackle industry. :)

I've clearly troden on your toes and likewise no offence. Please enlighten me why I haven't got a clue on this topic. I can remember the good old days when this country actually made things, I also appreciate that the quality of some products was questionable, and in my view that is where this country went wrong and this opened up our markets to EU, American and Japanese imports which were better made. There are still some UK manufacturers of quality fishing kit in the UK and I would prefer to buy British even if it cost a bit more and at least you can speak to someone! I also appreciate that Far Eastern countries' manufacturing and quality have come on. However, I do like to see made in the UK.

if you go to india and sell something that says 'made in UK'
they would bite yer hand off!

I have heard from a pretty reliable source that Chinese tackle manufacturers are planning to raise their prices by between 10 and 30% next year.

Apparently there is already a strong change in customer/manufacturer relationship out there, with attitudes suddenly hardened towards UK buyers. I guess they look at the fact that they are now the worlds largest economy and exporter, and feel somewhat superior...they no longer need us as much as we need them :(

And it seems it can only get worse! Perhaps Nostradamus had a point:D

Cheers, Dave.

And they are fast approaching having a monopoly. Since we are so dependent on foreign sourced products, they have us over a barrel.

I too would like to see more tackle manufactured in the UK. Seems we all agree on that.

But if you think that RRP's would remain the same.....

:)

How about this. I believe that Delkims are made in the UK. The TXi retails at about £120. If this were made in China, what do you think the retail price would be - £60? Not a chance the tackle "manufacturer" will get what they think that the market will stand. If the kit were made in the UK, the profit might be 100%, stuff from the Far East, 300%. If you want another example to illustrate this, try Dyson, R&D in the UK, manufacture in the Far East - Dyson used to manufacture in the UK. Sound familiar?

Rather than discuss a theoretical example such as Delkin moving their manufacturing overseas, how about some factual examples. Hardy moved the manufacture of fly reels overseas and they dropped in price to the customer by anything up to almost £200. Greys moved the manufacture of the 'Bewick' centrepin to Korea and it dropped from £199 to £149.99. When Harrison introduced their range of rods built overseas they were cheaper than those made in Liverpool. Loads of the larger companies - up until the recent worldwide economic recession - kept their prices the same, or even reduced them, year on year as a direct result of reduced manufacturing costs arising from Far East manufacturing.

If you think there is any fishing tackle manufacturer offering a 300% mark up I would love you to tell me who it is as I would stock it immediately. Come to think of it, what fishing tackle even has a genuine 100% markup? :)

From a retailers POV, i.e. the price they pay trade and the price they retail it, none whatsoever. From a consumers POV, i.e. genuine cost of manufacture to the price they pay in the shop, most of it.

Are you including R&D, sales, marketing and distribution costs in your 'genuine cost of manufacture' Chris? I'm just interested how you come to the conclusion that you do.

And when the customer opens up the box with House of Hardy stamped on it and the insignia etc, opens up the plush bag, takes out the reel and there on the back is a little gold sticker "China" or PRC. It just doesn't have the same cachet somehow, little wonder they dropped the price!

On this fact we are in 100% agreement. Interestingly the transfer of Hardy's reel manufacturing overseas and the consequential reduction in retail prices boosted our sales of their reels to UK customers but utterly destroyed our international sales.

It seems that the rest of the world values products 'made in Britain' far more highly than we do.

I think we are a price sensitive nation, the saying
"A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing"

Can ring true until we loose it altogether.

does daiwa manufacturer in the uk still?

I spoke to Drennan today, they are sending me the bits I lost by post tonight complimentary, now that is very good service !!

Stuart, there is a screw on end cap which came off first. Drennan said the O ring is the key there, it may not have been fitted properly, they suggested NEVER undo the cap. if you want to clean the twist lock mechanism take the inner pole out from the top end. Having lost mine the twist lock kept getting dirty and not working, after cleaning it one occasion, I went fishing and it came lose/fell off. Others on here have had similar problems, the twist lock does need cleaning occasionally.
