which barbel rod?

Im looking to buy a new rod for the new season.
I already have a 1.75 wychwood which is fine for using on the rests but not ideal for roving.
Im looking at either tref wests 12ft barbel, chris holleys 11ft 1.75tc or at half the price, a fox duo-lite xtra 11ft 1.75.
now obviosly chris's and trefs are double the price of the fox, I will probably be using it twice a week throughout the season, and will also be taking it on my upcoming trip to the royalty.
any advice on any of the above rods much appreciated!

I have handled both of the others Trefs and Chris's. In my opinion, both i thought were a bit heavy and possibly overgunned (for me) for roving, rolling and static fishing, and also a bit floppy at the tip end which is not to my liking. However, i am sure they would suit others personal requirements whatever they may be.

rod

Hi m8 i would go for a pair of harrison torrix just depends on
what you have got to spend on the rod I just had a pair buile

I have got a Wychwood Extremis 1.5 tc which I bought in a job lot, it is the best all round rod for barbel I have owned, why it is discontinued? I don't know, but they are rare now, but if you can get hold of one,....and if you don't want it please let me know:)

Oh! yes the Walton 1.6 slim blank and a nice through action, and about £60 now a steal.

I had a couple of 15+ barbel out on the lighter 1.3 version and many others of 12-13+. The 1.6 is slightly more powerful.

But I also enjoy using my Hexagraph Ray Walton Specialist, now called the Avon. My 1lb version has caught barbel up to 12 3/4 lbs with ease.

As ever

Got mine for £31.00, new version aswell, just be patient and you`ll get one for a steal.

Beautiful rods.

That is a steal, the new version have the improved reel seat too. Got mine (mint) to-gether with the 1.5 Whychwood Extremis, Barbel, and a Mitchell 13' 'Top Feeder' rod  all for £100, all unused.

But for £31 you should feel guilty about using it,:( if it will make you feel better I can take it off your hands for £40:D

Thanks for the generous offer Neil, i`ll just carry on feeling guilty. :)

I use it on the upper Lea, have not had a double on it yet but great fun, even with the smaller Barbel.

The Hexagraph 1lbt/c deluxe version was/is a gem of a rod. I used this one all the time and caught the British Record of 17.4 and others of 17.3, 17.12 and 18.13 plus loads of 8-15+ specimens in my Adams era in the late 1990's-2004. I had mine finished in matt black, with gold tipped black or violet intermediate whippings all through. At the time the RRP was around £353.00 for the standard model. The custom deluxe model with intermediates was a good deal more aroud £400.
Today, i think the RRP for the standard version (without intermediates or personal choice extras) is...£740.00:eek:

The Bruce and Walker Powerlite 1.2t/c was another that i field tested and i was going to put my name too (basically a cheaper carbon alternative to the RW Specialist 1lb Hexagraph with the same action etc). This is also a thin deceptively powerful blank with all through action. Another worth considering if youve got the dosh. £364.00p.
However, the RW/JWyoung 1.6 will do the same job in catching barbel and other species as the Hexagraph and Powerlite but at a much lower price, similar to types of car getting you from A to B, ie: Ford Fiesta or a Rolls Royce.

That's very reassuring Ray thanks:) I look forward to testing 'your' Young's on a 17lb plus barbel.:)
