I am looking to get possibly 2 new barbel rods something around the 2lb test or higher will be used in floods and for throwing out heavy feeders of at least 5 ounces i am looking to spend around £200 but i am unsure what to get i currently have a wychwood tri tip which has a 2lb Avon top but seems under gunned lovely rod though any ideas ? thanks Alan. :)

Drop Dave Lumb a line, DL Specialist Tackle, have a chat with him and see what he can do for you.

He sorted me out with a brilliant rod and it was not too expensive either.

I think in this bracket time after time again you can name about 4 very good rods.
Korum Neoteric twin tip 1.75tc 2.2tc.
Drennan Power barbel 2lbtc.
Wychwood Maximiser which is 13ft and about 2.5tc.
Or Fox floodwater which has a tc of 2.75 with a quiver section.
All very good rods and time and again these are the rods that are suggested. I have had all but the Wychwood and would reccomend all of them as excellent mid range rods.

Depends what river you are fishing and how you intend to fish it! In the edge and on small rivers, i'll still use 1.75 Infinities. If i'm banging out a 7oz feeder plus g/bait into the middle of a swollen thames at somewhere like maidenhead or on the lower severn, i'll use 2.5 Specimen Neoterics with 30lb braid. You dont need too much subtlety in a flood. :)

I'm confused, not difficult to do unfortunately. I read the OP as having £200 for two rods. Others seem to be reading it as £200 per rod. If not, could someone please let me know where to get Daiwa Infinity Barbel rods for £100 a pop or less, I'll be buying some ASAP.

Idealy i would preffer 100 ish a rod but would be willing to pay more if it was worth it and i will be using the rods on the middle trent on heavy river conditions.

As Chris has said, take a run to Climax Allan and have a waggle of the Fox 2 and 3/4 pound rods. The 15 foot extreme is a very good rod, and will do everything you want. but not every ones cup of tea. Will be interesting what you come up with..

Alan,

Whilst it is true that you may get a good deal at a large tackle store, it is worth considering your local tackle shop (if you have one that is!). I pop into mine as aoften as possible, not nessecarily to spend loads of money, but for a few feeders, new line etc and more importantly for a good chat too. I'm fortunate in having Woody's as my local in Hereford and have established a good relationship with Paul.

I'll be honest and say I only buy custom built rods these days (although haven't bought one for a couple of years now) but for bags, reels etc I'd go to my local tackle shop first these days. The reason? Well if something does go wrong I know I can take it back there and get a replacement if not immediately, then certainly within a few days.

I've often used larger stores for expensive items, but you simply dont get any personal service from them unlike your local tackle dealer.

Give yours a try you may be suprised what they have and what they can offer you.

That said, have a look at the Free Spirit Tamer range..(your local tackle dealer may be able to get you a pair..)

Have I broken the record for mentioning 'Local Tackle Dealer' the most times yet? :)

Some great recommendations from the posters above. I'm still using Fox Floodwater Duos (I wrote a review about them some time ago in the reviews section). Still rate them as very competent to do what you want on big rivers or in floods. At £100 per pole you'll be looking for a discount offer or second hand but buying a used one wouldn't put me off.

Do waggle as many as you can before choosing!

Alan,

I have just brought the Fox 15ft Duo-Lite Extreme 2.75tc rods from Climax and I must say they are the dogs dangly bitz in the current conditions:D:D
I have been lobbing 8oz leads out with ease and the power when playing the fish in the floods is second to none.........Best flood water rods for the Trent in that price bracket!!!

Good to hear that, I've just bought a couple as well and hope to try them next week. Some of the fittings are a bit on the budget side, but what can you expect for £100 per rod? All in all, they appear excellent value.
