What Fluoro For Combi Rigs?

John Cook

Hiya All,

Can i ask what Make and Breaking strain fluoro you think is best for tying up your combi rigs with the albright knot?

Thank You.

No expert on combi-links, but imo similar diameters are best. Otherwise do some extra turns for the finer braid. I think stiff flouro is probably best as soft would defeat the object of the rig.
The knot I use is a back to back grinner. Not sure if this is the same knot? As far as breaking strain goes I have used a thick flouro 10lb link and a short 2-3 inch 15lb braid link.
Last time I made one I used korda IQ. I have found some flouro's are prone to kinking more than others though with this knot.

Thank you for your thoughts David, yes you would need a thickish fluoro otherwise it defeats the object, i have tried the coated braids but they are to light thin and limp to do a proper job..

I'm using 20lbs Korda IQ2 tied to 15lbs drennan sinkbraid. The knot I use is a version of the albright knot, there are a few different versions of this knot.Mine will hold when pulling for a break,it's always the hook that straightens out first and that does require extreme pressure.

I can recommend Myles Gascoyne's albright knot....

Hi Steve,

Nice video thats my knot....What is the 20 lb IQ2 like? does it hang straight or is it easy to straighten?

I have been using 12 and 15lb Nash End Game fluoro for some years, (as a result of a bulk purchase deal on ebay), connected with an Albright knot to Drennan Super Specialist Sinking braid of the same breaking strains.
I have had no problems despite using hook lengths of over four feet but great care must be taken when forming the Albright Knot and rigorously testing it.

Martin is 12bs fluoro heavy or thick enough for a proper combi rig?

It's remarkable stuff John, straight off the spool it is a bit curly and doesn't hang straight but after stretching it out between the fingers under tension a few times it does eventually hang straight.

It also sinks like a stone, hugs the bottom and has great abrasion resistance,I've been dragged through rocks be angry barbel and it's still held. Can't fault it at all.

Thank you Steve sounds just what i am after, will pick up a spool.:)

Yes it works OK but I am using a maggot feeder with a single plastic maggot on a size twelve with Korda tungsten hook link weights to pin everything down.
Fishing the river Kennet so no long casts.
