after packing up yesterday i thought id have stroll up river a bit & stopped to chat to a couple of guys killing time spinning for a bit. they had no barbel as thats what they came for but the one of them said he had a zander about 4 oz in weight, the worm was bigger than the fish he said. now then i have heard of the odd bigger one being caught but not breeding fish, how old would it be, bye the way i was on the (upper) middle severn. some of you will know the area i fish

They have certainly been caught on the middle.

I know of three confirmed captures.

But, I'd suggest that the fish you are talking about could very well have been a Daddy Ruff.
They are often mistaken for small Zander......

Have you got a picture?

steve i thought exatly the same, but what can you say to them, they seemed pretty clued up. well they had a nice chair anyway,

Tend to agree with Steve about it being a Pope Neil, But there again there's a first time for everything. Take care Jim.:).

Be nice to know if tommy ruff are still about in numbers? Iv only ever caught 3 in my life of general course fishing on a canal that runs off of the Tidal Trent. Cracking little fish.
