Welsh Dee Boris

Neil Gallimore

Senior Member & Supporter
As I've said on here I'm going to mainly fish the upper and middle Severn but when I have limited time I'm going to fish the Dee for Boris so due to no one posting on here should I post or just keep it a secret if I'm lucky enough to bag one???

The Dee was my very first river I ever 'fished', I was all of about six and my grandparents were hoteliers and the river ran alongside. The tackle consisted of my seaside crab line and bait I nicked from the cats dinner.

I even waded into some likely spots, but alas I never did catch a Salmon, or even a Barbel, if I had I would not have kept it a secret, and neither should you, it would make a great story.

On here of late it is all about what gear, be nice to have some real Angling adventures to savour for a change.

Joe you say “ his swims ” ? 🤔 but I ask who’s “ river “ ? 😉 if I hadn’t been told anything about fishing 🎣 I wouldn’t know much if anything about it? And I would more than likely be playing golf ⛳️ or something else now? As I suspect you would be too? So If someone would wish to share there joy and experience’s it can be done in a way that doesn’t give locations away by putting an X on the map 🗺️ or by plastering photos all over social media, I for one would rather share with others, than be a secret squirrel 🐿️ 😁

Jim,

I wrote "I'd suggest keeping the DETAILS to yourself".

"his swims" I think most members of the forum understood what I meant.

;)

I get the fish chasing side if what we do, I am a very average Barbel angler but lucked out on a few fish on a particular stretch and understand how some people enjoy ruining it not only for the angler but for the fish too.
I have no time for that personally and seeing a fish I caught recaptured again and again and being submitted for Drennan cup with a picture of the fish and swim, well that's poor.
Not that I worry about anything other than the fish welfare, I don't care about the angling kudos just that big old girl gets to live out her years relatively peacefully.
We are on here extremely respectful of fish welfare and would be mortified if we killed a barbel through mishandling, certainly I would, but I believe a river such as the Dee producing a barbel would be worth celebrating, not so sure the Salmon guys would agree though.

I’ve seen lots of quiet, big fish venues ruined by too much publicity. It only needs one photo in the ‘wrong’ place.

I’ve been effectively chased off syndicate venues by members nicking my swims/casting across swims because they have found out I’m catching and they can’t be bothered to do the work themselves.

It’s not ‘safe’ enough to name the river but not the stretch/area. People come looking for you…….

These days I want quiet fishing - me against the fish, rather than me against other anglers. If waters are busy I simply won’t fish there.

I agree with that, but the Dee by all accounts will never be one of those waters? I don’t think the type of anglers mentioned would be up for pulling hens teeth? They just want to catch a quick fish take a photo for there social media and sponsors etc not a lot of kudos in blanking for 6 - 8 months for a return of maybe one fish? These types of anglers have a very hungry ego’s to feed.

Agreed Jim, by nature those types want all the groundwork already done. For me anyway I love that sometimes a Barbel can be caught in the most unlikely of places be it a urban centre or the wilds of West Wales.
I was born in Bristol by the Bristol Avon near the center of Bristol, it was then heavily polluted and fishing there was never an option growing up, but now huge bags of Bream Roach etc are being caught by a few hardy anglers, and I salute them, and hope one day they might break cover with a Barbel capture.

Maybe you are right; but I’m not going to take the chance.

Thanks for all of your advice and i wouldn't put the catches on social media but if I am lucky enough to catch one I will put it on here just to share my catch / enjoyment but no pegs or stretch will be shared 👍
Great Neil... it could be a long wait happily toast your success if you do manage a Dee Barbel with a bottle of Moet I have set aside for Bristol City's promotion to the Premiership.
I wonder what will come first?
