Hi all

A freind and myself had a few problems with the above on the trent sunday night, lots of loose weed coming down clogging up out feeders ,hookbaits ect.

Was just wondering how you deal with this problem,i know the best thing is to wait a few weeks for it all to push through, but on the day/night you may not want to wait :)
Thanks
Paul

Paul, it is worth trying a small piece of line/whatever tied on in marker-knot style a couple of feet above the end tackle. It tends to catch the weed travelling down the line (pushed by the current) before it reaches your end gear and masks the hook etc. It isn't the complete answer, but it does help.

Cheers, Dave.

Similar to Dave I used a bead stoped by a drennan grippa stop a few feet about the lead/feeder.

I also had a lot of problems with the weed last weekend but as for using stops to catch the weed...waste of time!!
We had that much weed was coming down the lead wouldn't stop still for more than a min, I did manage to hit one fish but it pulled out............ in the weed:rolleyes:

Find a swim with an upstream snag that is deep on the near bank, it will catch loads of weed. Use a larger than normal feeder and a nice soft tipped rod that can soak up loads of salad.

If you need to fish far out in the open water either move or don't bother and stay at home.

Just cast upstream so any debris that collects on your line drifts up it away from your rig, a lot of it will fall off when it reaches the surface - especially usefull for autumn leaves. ;) If it's really bad up your lead size to hold position for longer to give the fish chance to find your bait.

Paul what some people do not realise is that when weed is coming down, it catches on the line and ends up in the middle of the bow produced by the action of the river on the line. Only when you wind in it covers the feeder and the hook bait, 95% of the time the bait is unobstructed by weed. There aint much you can do apart from putting a heavy feeder on, chuck over the flow, and sometimes the best thing to do is just go home ans wait until it starts to fine down.
I for one will not be fishing the first flood or even a few extra feet of water that comes as it will be a world of pain, probably quite costly and possibly a blank.

I'm with Conrad on this one, careful swim selection ( not always an option i know ) is the best answer, as Conrad says fish downstream of snags and overhanging branches that trail in the water it will usually catch the majority of the rubbish.
Downstream of tight bends are also good where the flow and so the weed and rubbish is diverted to the far side.

Weed cutting at Holme Pierrepoint. The same happened this time last year. Pack up and go home and let it flush through.
