This blew my mind until it occured to me that that the Water Companies pay these salaries because these people are very good at what they do. Protecting investors, putting up water bills, avoiding fines, cutting corners to increase profit and deceiving the public. Protecting our waterways doesn't even come into it.

The system is completely and utterly broken.

I would assume so. Paying a salary of 30m would be dopey as you’d loose in excess of half it to tax and I would doubt they’d do that. As for those other countries, which ones? The other G7 nations, the US can even get drinking water to its people.

I’ve not read the report but from the analysis and from Sir John Cunliffes speech yesterday it does seem serious and thorough.

The government is making the right noises so far, abolishing offwat and promising new regulators. Whether it carries on once the fuss has died down is something else

It basically means we all end up paying more for our rivers to be polluted, with this government I wouldn’t expect anything less .

It's worth noting that there have been a record number of criminal cases against water companies since labour have been in power if anyone was looking for a positive and no, I'm not a lefty communist.

Hasn’t there also been a record number of discharges as well, so that despite legal action being taken the incidence hasn’t been effected. Yet anyway.

Those salaries are clearly big numbers, but when you consider that's for 10 years and that companies like Severn Trent have turn overs in the Billions I don't think the salaries are surprising or out of the ordinary. That's not defending them in any way, i think the uncontrolled discharge of sewage is a disgrace. It's just normal for CEO's of big companies to get big salaries.

It certainly feels like there is an increase in pollution incidences. We can only hope that more legal cases makes a difference as it's the only way. Of course constant protest outside the homes of these CEO's might be more persuasive.

CEOs are generally rhino-skinned and have a ready made answer to any protests like that unfortunately. In my experience the people who really suffer are the families who aren’t guilty of anything.

They are duty bound to act in the best interests of the shareholders, whatever that means, and are answerable to them and the regulators who for a number of reasons haven’t been doing their jobs

Not excusing anyone, and hopefully the report will bring about change particularly in regulation, as theres next to no chance of nationalization
