Warm fishing jackets & trousers

I did look at them several years back, they look good but they are only half the waterproofness of the greys. It was that which swayed me to get the greys.
They do the non crunchy jackets in dpm now and they are on offer for about 60 quid just now 👍.

I think 10,000 HH (hydrostatic head) is plenty for a fishing jacket. When pressure is applied for a prolonged period, any garment will eventually let in water at the pressure point. Outdoor clothing companies started quoting HH because hiking and climbing jackets would leak where rucksack straps had applied all-day pressure. That doesn't really apply to most of us, but a fly fisherman wearing a shoulder bag all day in the p155ing rain might want more.

(Aqua's DPM jacket is only 3,000 HH)

Blimey, only 3,000 HH, I hadn't noticed that! I think the green one is the better option between them then.
I can't find it now, but the greys one was advertised as being 20,000 so that was one of the deciding factors for me to get one. I paid about 90 quid for my first one, then after having one for a while and finding it to be ideal for me I noticed them on offer at 50 quid from glasgow angling. I took advantage of the sale and got several more in two different sizes and colours.They only do two colours, a carbon colour and the other camo pattern. I got the smaller size for summer and the larger sizes to be able to wear a t shirt and a thick hooded top underneath during the colder months like we are in now.
I couldn't find a lightweight packable and waterproof jacket that worked for me for yonks, the greys has worked out really well for me. If I hadn't come across the greys then I would have got the aqua non crackle 😉🤣.
 
Snugpak Torrent with a base layer or two depending on conditions. Seriously good jackets. There is an extreme version available for the uber-nesh amongst you.

Buffalo Mountain Shirts are as good as it gets for keeping warm, the only downside is that that they are little faffy to get on and off. Amazingly warm though.
 
Can I reccommend a different approach?
I remember hearing about this years ago.
We all talk commonly about layering with different layers using a baselayer, mid layer, insulator and a shell perhaps. Find a decent lightly insulated mid layer that is warm for it's weight and buy two or three of them.
 
Just a heads up for anyone looking to buy a thermal underlayer set, I got some off temu for I think around 11 quid for the top and bottoms. I got another set after they arrived and I saw how good they were. Then temu sent me (my mrs) an offer to get another set for £3.50 ! They do them in various shades of camo and black etc etc colours.
I find temu to be excellent as if you don't want or like an item for whatever reason you send it back free of charge and as soon as its sent off at the post office they pay your money back.

Don't know where you heard this, but taken literally it's nonsense. Base layers, for instance, are 'cut' to fit under other layers, whereas waterproof outers are cut to fit over mid layers. You'd have to buy two or three different sizes of a particular mid layer item, if you wanted them to fit one over the other. Obviously, you can wear several mid layers, but not of the same item.

I think you need to look at the type of fishing you do in the winter and dress accordingly . . .

If you're roving and not staying in one swim for more than 30mins then layers has got to be the most appropriate solution (with a decent shell if rain looks likely and you're not bringing a brolly)

If static then sweat build up only occurs on the yomp to the swim, so packing a puffa/synthetic or down insulated jacket/salopettes to don after the walk will work far better . . . waterproofs also not really necessary if you lug a brolly . . .maybe a light mac or poncho to keep the worst off whilst playing fish etc

Spot on. I wish there was a do all system but there just isn't. What I wear for walking is not what I wear for sitting for hours

I've kind'a got myself a clothing system which does work for walking and then for when I stop and fish for a while. I'm virtually always stood up when I stop walking, but i'm still stationary and have the added problem of being stood thigh deep in cold water, propper cold water from now until next season lol.

Sod that Alec! 😂 I buy what I want when I want, Mrs just rolls her eyes, and says nothing. She don't know I'm off to collect a brilliant Drennan meduim combo feeder that normally goes for around 120 140 mark for £90....got to do this before her flight lands back in the UK in tomorrow! 🤫🤫

Was that the one on eBay @Julian Griffiths ….was so tempted myself, superb rod at a bargain price! Was just being greedy though as I already have one
