Tubing for protection?

Richard Barrett

Just wondered if anyone used tubing up the line for protection against sharp objects when Barbel fishing?

Currently I don't, but wondered if it would be worth an extra fish or a season. I'm fishing on the Trent that seems to be full of sharp rocks and sunken trees?

But it is something else to lose or think about!

Thanks.

As a rule, and maybe.my rule only use tubing if you see rocks in front of you. Ie those placed by the NRA or snags present.

I've used it ever since I moved over to a braid mainline (a good number of years ago now) to compensate for it's poor abrasion resistance. Usually just a foot to 18 inches of it above the lead or feeder via a free running lead clip. My hook lengths are coated braid with the last few inches stripped back. Works ok for me on the Trent, Wye and Yorkshire rivers.

sunrise amnesia is rock proof mate, i started to use it fishing a carp water with some real nasty bars covered with zebra mussels, the amnesia was the inner bit of some flyline so eventually i used the whole fly line with the ends striped back for knotting, it worked fine:)

I also use a diamond eye threader but it's hard work with small diameter sink tubing so I tend to have a few made up and pre-threaded with a little braid with loops in the end to pull my mainline through should I need to re-rig.

Richard, you should be right in the fact it might get you an extra fish or two.In a similar way to back leading its good to have something other than a bow string tight piece of mono or braid up from the lead or hook length.Obviously you cannot fish a back lead with a lot of snags or rocks in the middle of the Trent ,the next best thing is rig tubing, and a long length.Try fishing one rod with tubing and one without and compare results. You can also play about with rig tubing (it does not have to lie on the river bed in the rocks),you can add a cork ball and fish it like a reed rig.
