Trotting rod

Could it have been China? I have certainly seen vids of what you are describing of Chinese anglers. Talk about Bolognese rods! These bad boys looked like cooked spaghetti with a bloke on one end and a catfish on the other, and lots of exaggerated yanking and heaving! šŸ¤£

I have seen some of the china/ orienatal ones Alan, but no, the vids I watched were in europe, the anglers had rounder eyes lol.

Your suggestion that the original Italian Bolognese rods lacked reels is where my doubts lie.

Pointless arguing if you're convinced you're right, Chris, but every search I did about the origins (in Italy), came back the same result... very long rods, no reels.

Sounds like youā€™ve done some good sleuthing Kevin šŸ‘šŸ»

Now, do us all a solid and post up some links and references. I canā€™t speak for everyone, but I wouldnā€™t mind reading up on it too.

If you want to know the history, get a copy of this and brush up your Italian.

From what I understand, the origin is similar to the link Ian posted; originally they used ā€œcanna fissaā€ (literally fixed rod, but more like a pole) then moved to ā€œtelescopica con anelliā€ (telescopic rod with rings) and that became the bolognese rods we know today.

Ah lovely, so everybody here is a little bit correct ;)

Quite possibly. One thing is for sure, having found out what bolo is, or might be, and having no interest in either outcome, it's just one more mystery of fishing terminology, like spomb and spod, that I no longer have to worry about. šŸ˜„
