Trent barbel rods

Ste Whybrow

Senior Member
Hi probably been done a thousand times but looking for a rod maybe a pair to handle the tidel Trent ,I’m a member of normanton but never been so decided to have my last couple of sessions before season end on there,my normal set up for the ribble is korum 2lb tc with Shimano 6000 reels ,looking at peoples rods of choice on social media they are using 2-5 and upward is this correct ,was looking at Fox horizon barbel in 2-75 but this to me seems extreme cheers ste

I use a pair of Fox Barbel floodwater Duos, 2.75 for the Ribble and Trent, purely on the grounds of rocky nature of the Ribble and Trent, at least the bits that I fish, I am not at all a Trent regular though, in fact I could really do with a bit more Trent success than I have had so far .
I am sure that somebody with better experience of the Trent will be along with some good suggestions.

I use rods that are just perfect for the Tidal Trent and the really great thing is they are not over gunned in lesser conditions due to the brilliant action IMHO the last thing you want is a rod that is not up to getting a fish in quick
I cant see any merit in thinking your a clever angler using light lines and light rods and landing an exhausted fish thats half dead and so I can highly recommend Diawa Powermesh Specialist Barbel rods in 2.75lb 12`

Do you not feel over gunned with them on the ribble as I use 2tc rods ,the stretch i fish is relatively snag free but would like a rod I can use on the Trent and Ribble .

Depend on where you fish Ste.. I fish a swim that is very wide, but only about 18ins deep for 3/4 of the way across, the shallow section is filled with ankle breaking rocks, and has some deeper troughs in it, to catch, it is needed to cast over the shallow rock infested area into a deeper fast flowing run... the swim holds doubles, which are not uncommon, once hooked, it is imperative to keep the fish up in the water or they inevitabley go to ground in the shallow rocky area . A rod with some guts is needed, I have used and failed with 2lb TC rods as the fish just bully themselves into the snags .

The few other anglers that successfully fish the swim use anything up to 3lb t/c rods.

In the other swims , I use split cane rods, either a Mk IV Carp rod or a Salmon worming rod , which come in at about 1-1/2 TC .

The13ft Korum 2.5 for upstream rod and Rod Hutchinson one rod 3.25 ,have served me well the past few years .

Korum 13ft 2.5Ib are great for the money if you can find any ...great for lobbing heavy feeders/leads but still retain nice action when a fish is hooked. But if your looking to invest in a top end rod look at Peregrine flood rods

wow them peregrine are smart

I find it hard to just have one rod for the Trent, I have 3 different setups, one for Caster and maggot fishing, which is on my lightest rods, fox Kevlar Barbel. My 2nd is a Harrison special, 13ft 2.5lb which is very much a player's rod, and can cope with anything apart a big flood with a massive Barbel on. My 3rd is my old faithful 13ft Ballista"s, which again is a players rod, which can punch a 6oz loaded feeder 55yd no probs at all, the only rod I have complete faith in getting a big Barbel out in testing conditions.
Off the shelf, deffo have a look at the Korum 13s, Daiwa Powermesh 2.75 and the fox 2.75s. Lots to look at, but worth using a rod to the conditions wtc

The korums are great for the money I've been using them for the tidal trent only never feel under gunned casting 8oz out, i have them coupled up with a pair of 8000 biomaster pit reels makes a massive distance for casting and retrieve especially in flood conditions.
