Tiny Hempseed?

Julian Marshall

Senior Member
I picked some hemp up at a local pigeon specialists place, currently being soaked but it seems very small to me - maybe I`m remembering it as being bigger in the past (like Wagon Wheels)..
I`ve had a search through various forums & found this recommendation:
https://www.blakesbaits.co.uk/product/huge-hemp/
Has anyone tried this? I actually want it for roach at the moment, maybe it would mean I wouldn`t end up using tares as hookbait.
Thanks if you can advise, Julian

Hi Julian, ive tried the giant hemp in the past, ( bought a sack full ), but from a different ( but very well known ) supplier. It was an absolute b*gger to try and split, tried all the usual methods and more. The few seeds that did, i kept as hookers, didn't really have much more success than i did with the normal size smaller stuff. Maybe the supplier you recommend has better stuff, if i were you, i would just buy a small quantity and give it a try. If you do, let us know how you get on. :)

Cheers
Derek.

A major seed importer I live near has struggled to get any decent hemp lately. I bought a sack last week and on opening, it was smaller than no. 8 splitshot! I returned it and managed to get some giant hemp elsewhere. However, this last year or so, I've struggled to get it to split in any decent amount, despite soaking etc. Anyone else had this recently?

I've always bought Hemp from Hinders (4 - 5 years), not cheap but the grain size was huge and it always split; however according to their website, you can now choose between French of Chinese Hemp, but there's a note stating that the grain size is smaller than in past years. Some people moaning via feedback too that its on the small size.

So I now need a new supplier too.

If it's too small for your hooking requirements, and/or it won't split, then just use it as feed... and use artificial on the hook. Even a black rubber/plastic bead

Had a bit of an experiment with the grains - I went to Maltby`s Stores in Hull & got some of their `Huge Hemp` to try & have added the pic of the standard hemp from the pigeon place, tares & HH. It`s certainly bigger, seems to split about as well as the small stuff after a 24hr soak. The split rate of both seemed a bit lower than I recall in the past - might need a longer boil. Maltby`s sell on Ebay & Amazon. Helpful chap who fishes himself said the quality has been up & down but seems to be improving at the momnet.
I like the rubber bead idea, I`ve got some which are too soft really, will put a tuft of PTFE tape in the hole & try my luck.

I have in the past bought bulk bags of hempseed and found as it gets older its harder to split which is why you need to buy it from a source that sells loads

now I have found the very best way with no soaking involved too !!!
is to use a Pressure cooker

I simply fill the little basket that came with mine ONLY just cover the seed with water ( add any flavours you want chilli flakes ,Garlic etc)
(IMPORTANT) if your cooker is adjustable set it on the highest pressure setting !

get it up to steam THEN time 5 mins steaming after switch off let cool down or put it in water to cool it

and Bingo perfect split cooked hempseed with all the oils and flavours ( on a lake you should see the oil slick that comes up when you bait up )
