thermometers???

Your post was very funny jim.I apologise - now as for the triple point........

Touche(acute), Geoff. Happy to discuss the triple point of water 273.16 K and the boiling point of water, but we are probably applying a little too much science to a pursuit which is semi-empirical at best. On a serious note, it amazes me just how little we know about fish behaviour.

You are right Jim. I am a 0 K = −273.15 °C and 273.16 K = 0.01 °C man myself.

Excellent, Geoff, glad that we are singing from the proverbial. Next topic?
Sorry, Geoff, better get off to bed, I'm on the Gritting lorry at 6am, hence my knowlege of triple point, depression of freezing point etc. These Councils sure put you through the theory aspect.

Jim....what exactly is it aboutv Geoff that you find cute....and why do you want to touch him? Or am I reading that wrong? :D

Cheers, Dave.

Not at all, touch and cute are my bywords or is it biwords. I'm delighted with your interest, David, and have a large thermometer in my tackle bag which I'd be more than happy to demonstrate to you. However, I must warn you that taking readings may be an eye watering process.

Hell....is the scale THAT hard to read  I should get a new set Jim, those ones sound like they will make you go blind if you play with them too much....

Cheers, Dave.

Well Jim, I love your reply - very nice and the one later from Geoff about calibrating in the mouth, a bit like a cure for biting your nails - scratch elswhere before biting.

I have a reuben heaton and I have whipped a clip to attach a lead to it to take it down to the river bed - and that assumes I can reach the river bed.

I note the temperature and if I catch a fish I engrave it in my memory - I am happy to fish at a 4.5C reading on my thermomoiter 'cos I have caught a fish on the Goyt at that temperature before. Anything below and I am chancing my arm - but so what I may be enjoying myself and I may still catch a fish but I only get confident when it is 5+C on my thermometer.

When you catch fish note the temperature to give yourself an indication of the temperature next time you fish that river - or stillwater, 0.1 does not really make a difference - unless it is moving upwards.

It's all subjective anyway as someone elsewhere will have caught a fish at -4C when you have blanked. Measure trends, wait for the salt to be washed through and the temp to rise. Then you don't need to worry about calibrating your thermomiter - unless you like Jim's and Geoff's method

Have a look at www.lidl.co.uk Special Offers (Car Accessories) Digital Thermometer with 3m external sensor for £3.99 starts Mon 7th Feb! (don't know if it applies to all stores) Poole/Bournmouth area (BH17)
Could be a very good deal but like all things that are cheap you won't know until you try it! Gotta be worth a punt though.

Dave, also not a bad deal but look at the spec! 5.4ft sensor length is not really enough and it still works out 2 quid more expensive!!

Car thermometer

Hi I have had one of the indoor / outdoor Lidl car thermometers for a couple of years now, it may give temp trends, but, I have an idea that it is not very accurate at all, in the harsh weather just before Christmas, it was giving minimum temp readings of -3,outside, when I know it was -12 ( this was checked via 3 other thermometers and the car thermometer as well, all agreed with each other , except the Lidls finest )
I toyed with the idea of using it as a fishing thermo, the maxi, mini feature would be quite useful, but the idea of immersing the external sensor did not really appeal at all, plus, I baulked at the idea of trashing a £2.99p bit of technology ! Tight or what ?

Dave

Somerfields Thermometers

Somerfield were doing bog standard coloured alcohol thermometers for 10p each. You could certainly attach one of these to a string and a weight. Remember to stick a couple of trebles on it, Scaz Scaysbrook had a similar thermometer attacked by a pike. The thermometer was never seen again. As for the pike.... could now be one degree under.
