Thermometer - old style.

Looking to purchase an old style thermometer, not a digital type, for taking water temps.
Preferably about 6"-9" long.
Shockproof if possible.
If anyone has a link please post.

Jon.

I did the same very recently, brought the Reuben Heaton 'old' style of thermometer, because I wanted the accuracy of the reading to be spot on, and felt you can only do this with the old type of thermometer and not the digitals. I found the digitals always rounded up/down the figures, and never gave the accuracy I wanted.

Some people rate the 'point' and 'press' style of thermometer, which literally means as it says, cannot see how accuracy is obtained from that method?

Thats why Julian, everything you have stated and i cannot get on with Digi Scales either.

Cheers Malc, Just bought them from ebay, the forum works again...

Thank You

Jon

The only problem with "old style" as you call them..mecury thermometers is that they are easy to break. It was pretty easy at one time to just get a new thermometer to put in the housing, but not any more! The ones that point at the water really give me a laugh...why does anyone care what the temperature of the surface is?

I've got something similar like this here:

Fishpond Angling Thermometer

They were £9.99 in the UK on eBay but I can't find a UK seller at the moment. Very sturdy which is important for a clumsy oik like me.

Conrad
I've got one of those...as you say they don't break as easy as the stainless housed ones...but the top is easy to loose (anybody got a spare top?).

I have an old brass Rueben Heaton thermometer.......... does the trick, never runs out of batteries either.

I would implore anyone thinking of buying an old style thermometer not to buy a mercury filled one. There are enough contaminants getting into the water stream as it is without us introducing another extremely toxic material. The long term effects of mercury are very serious and although people may argue that the thermometers only contain a small amount the point is it is still being introduced.
I did notice on the Fishtec site they sell the thermometers Conrad mentioned earlier in the fly fishing section.

I used to have a mercury one, that was until I didn't put my foot on the cord and hurled it into the depths of The Tip Lake at Darenth ! !...That was way back in the 80's.....The thing about mercury thermometers is they respond slower than a alcohol filled versions...gives you time to read it before the difference in air temperature affects the reading...Most thermometers I've seen on e-bay have been alcohol filled so although unfortunately the link didn't work Darryl, i'll take a squint at the Fishtec site.
