Tench

Hi Si and Chris,

I most certainly wouldn't consider myself a Tench angler but do love to catch them, generally from late March to Late July, will be looking in to pick up tips............

Ian

somehow its difficult to think about tench on a day like this. It even snowed here this morning.

Hi chaps,
Being a 'seasonal' kinda guy I'll be back on the hunt again come the spring. The place I'm on is about 60 acres so it's not so much catching them, it's finding the little buggers :)
I dispensed with the alarms and light bobbins and switched to a sliding float down the deep margins, brilliant fun. Can't wait for next year now. No monsters yet but some around 8lb.
Some tincas to stir the loins...

Need to get through your book Chris which was bought for me by the WBC for my 40th.

Nice bit of fishing by the sound of it Ian, location in 60 acres shouldn't pose too many problems, apart from lots of early morning walks:)

Almost cant wait for next spring. All last years fish were stalked in the margins and ive never had so much fun in my life (well if you take women out of the equation that is) or so many frustrations. It still amazes how clever tench can be at avoiding the maggot with a hook in it. Crafty jiggers. :) and cant believe how many different types of hook got straightened by tench hooked close in. Hoping for my first nine come late may or june. :)

Paul, did you ever try those Pallatrax hooks ? i have used them down to size 12 without any problems, 10 and above the Kamasan B775s are probably the best of the lot ;)

I do love a tinca. Looking forward to trying a new venue come may. I never tire of catching a tench (artist formerly known as nicetench).

Yeah, nice pics Ian.

Si, i didnt try em, but i will. Think there's some in the bfw shop; Hinders dont sell em. The only hook that didnt straighten was the korum 12 S5s and i cant get them locally anymore. What was really surprising was that the size 12 korda choddy and 12 & 14 drennan barbel specialists and fox armapoints ssbp all opened out and i've has some very good barbel on all of those hooks.

Ive just bought some of the new mustad eyd specialists 6033NPBLN in 10,12 & 14. They look good and are supposed to be very strong, but i suppose i'll find out soon enough.

Paul

I wouldn't be the only Tench angler to say this but the Drennan Barbel hook is not very good !

Si,

I learnt the hard way, but i have had maggot caught double figure barbel on those hooks in a 14. I'll never use them for tench again, in fact i think i binned em anyway. :)

Paul

I'm the world champeon tench hook straightener and I can inform you that them Mustad Specialist long point hooks don't straighten out..... the tench drop off them far too quickly for that to happen!

That's a shame as they looked the part, but hopefuly they'll be okay for the barbel. Best sticking with the S5s then and maybe give the pallatrax hooks a go. Cant get the sedge hooks locally either.

Paul

Them Sedge Hooks are a problem. I don't know what happened.... they used to be great, but nowadays they don't have the backbone for the job. I had a word with Peter Drennan about it and he said that they are all from the same batch...... All I know is I once had faith in them and know I don't. And I'm not the only one who says this?!!!.......... mind you they were not designed for big tench fishing, the shape of the hook remains perfect though!
