Stuck Ferrule

Went trout fishing as a not very good substitute for the real thing. My arm was sore with casting and I did not catch anything (much the same as my barbel fishing then). Day over I tried to pull apart my carbon fibre two piece rod, would not budge. Asked another angler to hold one part while I pull the other, nothing, still stuck.
Managed to get the rod in my car, lucky I have an estate car, got home and asked my wife to help, both of us with Marigolds on to help grip and twist, still stuck.
I know I did not push the joints together to hard and I have never had this problem before. Has anybody else here had this problem and any ideas or tips to help me take the rod apart.

When you get assistance to separate a stubborn ferrule, the best method is for you both to hold both sections, that is one hand each on the same half.Stand facing each other.Decide which section is going to be twisted in which direction, and go for it,twisting each section in the opposite direction to the other.Hope this helps.Good luck;)

Hi Terry,i can remember a few years ago when a rod was stuck fast at it's joints, this was in a tackle dealers, everything was tried, warming up the joints, packing the joints with ice, pulling, pushing, banging and twisting, nothing seemed to budge the stuck joints,in fact at one stage we thought that it may have been sabotaged with glue, then the shop owner put the butt handle on the floor and very slightly put a bend in the rod and pulled and twisted at the same time, and hey presto the joints parted, but believe me it was an almighty struggle,i would recommend that you seek the advice of a good rod maker, good luck on this one,
Brian.

Terry, this is normally caused by heat, and with the good weather at the moment I would suspect that to be the case. Leave the rod in a cool place for a few hours and then try again. If you twisted the rod putting it together you will need to twist it the opposite way to seperate it as twisting locks the two halfs together so they will not pull straight apart.............

The best way to pull straight apart if just simply stuck is to put the rod behind your knees and hold with a hand on the outside of each knee joint and then push your knees apart using them to push your hands apart, if that makes sense!! Crouching slowly will help to do this slowly and naturally.

If you get it apart (and I've only been beaten by one rod), coat the male section with pencil lead - a soft carpenters pencil is made for the job. make sure there is no grit on either part of the joint.

Had trouble with one of my beach rods in the past, found a spot of wax helps the sticking problem, just give the joint a rub with a candle prior to using.
If your joint is still stuck, give it a squirt with WD40, then try the behind the knees trick, good luck.

I've been told in the past that before putting the ferrule together wipe your finger behind your ear, on forehead, or along side of nose then apply to the male ferrule. I think this relies on a greasy face though ;)

Hi again Terry, when the lads advised you to put the rod between your knees, that is what i meant when i said put the rod butt on the floor.

Thanks for all the advice . However the bugger is still stuck. I think that I will leave the rod alone for a week or two so as to give it a false sense of security, then when it's not looking give it a swift yank and see if I catch it unaware. Will let you know if that works
