Stolen Rods + New Rod Advice

got to say the answer to me is stop putting them in the holiday camps they call prisions and make are prision more like third world country prision were it is very harsh then they wont want to go out nicking failing that if you get caught stealing you lose a hand sounds harsh but it works everybody then realises you are a thief name and shame works for me
 
seems anything is worth having now, an old boy round here has had is model train collection nicked from his shed.

The lack of proper penalties make thievery all too attractive to the scum out there.
A sad testament to our current day times.
 
99% of all booters are honest people having a clear out or small traders getting rid of low end gear from house clearance etc, The dishonest ones usually turn up with no table, throw a blanket or sheet on the ground with a few high value goods, power tools are favourite, park on the end of a row for a fast getaway and rarely stay for more than an hour or two.
Your gear will probably go through several hands before it surfaces on the bay, in a pawn or tackle shop, in the small adds or at an auction.

The reason thieving is becoming more prevalent these days is a social one, if you are going to take benefits from people in a time of recession and population growth some desperate people are going to turn to theft. I'm not condoning it, just stating a fact.

It's a shame we can't stick them on a boat to the other side of the world like we used to; that would kill two birds with one stone. But the Aussies are a bit picky these days about who they let in so we're stuck with them.

your right adrian,
gear stolen is fenced for drugs, phones, bikes and swapped, by the time it's (if)found, the person who has it at the most gets charged with handling which is about a £50 fine!

In the unlikely event that they do get spotted I thought it may be worth sharing a few other items that were taken:

Kona Scrap Mountain Bike in army green
JW Young Purist 2 Pin- (this was given to me by my dad so has huge sentimental value)
2 x Shimano Integra Reels
2 x Okuma Epix Pro Reels
2 x Fox Carp Rods (cant remember model)
Korum Ruckbag
Korum 2 rod quiver
Original John Wilson Avon Quiver
Sage XP 9'6" #7 Fly Rod
Orvis 9' #4 Fly Rod
2 x Orvis Battenkill Reels
Wychwood Cartridge Reel
Orvis Fly vest (with numerous competition badges on back)
Simms Boat Bag
Abu Garcia spinning rod

Plus numerous other items of tackle and boxes, lures etc.

Altogether a big haul which when added up comes to nearly £5k and taken years and years to build up.

The insurance claims handler is coming round on Monday and I am bracing myself for a shock when I hear what they offer me...

sorry to here your bad news, you know your tackle will be sold for peanuts
its just the thought of it, that really hurts, and even if you did get to see some on a car boot sale, you have no proof its your, with no receipts or no id on your tackle, its **** mate,, but you never know some thing might turn up
 
I'm going to lay all my gear out and photograph it this weekend and do the same thing every year, it's the only way to prove the true value of what's gone should the worst happen.
With specialist bits costing three and four pound a pack your rig wallet alone is going to be worth a couple of hundred quid.
 
On the topic of theft and fencing stolen goods, a friend of mine was burgled many years ago. The weekend following his theft, he wandered around a local flea market and found some of his stuff there. This happened when auctions and the pawn shops were not so common place.

I would like to think that 99% of fishermen would never knowingly accept stolen goods. If bought from a legit outlet, you would automatically assume that the provenance would be ok and that someone had either flogged the stuff, having decided to give up fishing, or started a new hobby.

I don't accept the lack of benefits being contributary - theft is either drug driven or it's in the DNA. There are plenty of people struggling financially who would never contemplate stealing from another individual.

Definitely agree with that, Adrian. Prison isn't, and has never been, a deterrent.

Wow. Thats a very kind and generous offer Richard and has restored my faith in humanity :)
I've actually cobbled together some temporary kit so that I do not miss out on what seems almost perfect conditions on my local river and live in hope that the insurance company will not be too harsh with their offer. (wishful thinking I know).

I have managed to print over £1000 of receipts from online purchases I have made but as you guys will know, thta wont go far when you have to replace so much gear.

Has your insurance company actually stipulated that they will only pay out on items that you have receipts for? When a lot of my gear was nicked a good few years back, my insurance (house contents) paid out without my having a single receipt. I know things haver changed a lot in the last ten or twelve years, but even so, I would think that if the amount you are claiming is within the amount your tackle was insured for, the insurance company can not reasonably expect you to have receipts for every single item, unless that was a pre agreed condition.

They havent said they won't pay out on items I havent got receipts for, but when asked if I had receipts for everything and I answered no, they did say that the small print in the policy states that receipts should be kept!!

When I said that it was impossible to keep receipts for everything they responded by saying that pictures would help my case.

The loss adjuster is due on Monday morning so we will see what their stance is. The title loss adjuster does make me wonder which way they expect teh adjustment to be made.........
