Still a place for a lump of luncheon meat

If I'm using a braided rigs for meat fishing, instead of changing whole rigs everytime a hook blunts, I just have a loop tied on the end to simply loop on another hook a bit like a multi rig for carp fishing but with the loop pulled tight to the eye. Just a little tip that works for me.

A Google search and I've found spam in many flavours, unfortunately looks like it's only available in the USA. Don't they realise the untapped market of us angler's. Here in the UK they only have these varieties listed.
Etienne, that is exactly what I told the importers, but they were just not interested. They said they had to order each flavour by the pallet load and that was not economic.

Size 2 drennen continental pva nugget to stop it pulling through on the cast ..meats threaded on via loop in the top of the hook link ..then its just sit back on a tight clutch and wait for the rod top be dragged in ..I must admit when fishing this way I always use a jag lock down .

I like that idea and the paste wrap too. 👍 👌

When I'm fishing half a tin..... , I can't remember for the life of me where I got them from but I have some bait coils that are approx 25mm long by 15mm wide and they are very flexible in the case that , when you have screwed a third into the meat, you can then stretch it out to get more into the meat.
That way I can cast it 30yrds without it flying off the hair.
I combine it with a size 4 Nash brute and always fish with 35 to 50lb braid mainline, incorporating a 25lb coated hooklink , in case Mr Wells makes an appearance!!.
It always makes me smile and amazed that a barbel can shuffle that size of bait onto its gob😆😆😆.

I never did the massive lump of meat at Throop in the 80s but the tiny ( and I mean tiny) pieces on a hair of 1lb nylon attached to a size 8 Hilton hook ( seems all wrong) was very effective. I introduced similarly finely chopped meat via a bait dropper and sometimes they would take the bait before you could put the rod in the rest! Happy days that I miss so much.
Finely minced in the dropper or feeder was/is still popular with me. Back then I had a small hand mincer acquired from one of my uncles (a butcher amongst many other jobs!).

Also a fan of garlic. Sprays and pastes were on the shopping list once my supply of "ready made" disappeared. Probably didn't make much difference but when I only wanted the hook bait and no freebies, I had a lot of confidence in using a cage feeder stuffed with soaked sponge (glugged in modern angling parlance).

Thats a good idea about the pva nugget when you need to cast as opposed to swing the bait out. 👍

I agree that there is still a good case for the chopped/minced meat technique. We just need more Barbel round here to use it. I may well use it next month on the Severn. I think it provides a great deal of attraction without filling them up which becomes important as temperatures drop. Like you say a good dose of garlic would help! 👍

I’ve caught nearly all my barbel on spam, with a couple on maggots. Don’t tend to find any problems recasting plenty of times with a bit of grass under the hook bend. Usually use a size 6 and find the right size bait is one where i can just about push the hook through by hand and turn back in to the meat.
Have tried boilies but so far the only fish I’ve caught was a 1lb 8oz perch on two boilies wrapped in paste..
