Stealth and Concealment

On an opening day trip to my local little river I was amazed to observe how some anglers fish. The river in question is only a small, narrow stream, with high banks, yet several characters were quite content to perch themselves on the top of said banks and not sit still but make themselves even more obvious. On occasion they would be joined by a fishing chum who would add to the visibility problem, or as they would see it, no problem.

My fishing mate could not be detected by fish or fowl, and I found it hard to find her myself. Oh by the way she does not use bite alarms, bolt rigs, or massive weights. Perish the thought she even holds the rod and still manages to catch barbel.

Such fun

AS ever

I spent 4 hours early doors on the opening day down at my local free stretch. And I was surprised to watch two gents in full camo gear settle in upstream of me, one on one side one on the other. I thought to myself is there any point in all the background friendly attire when your spending the whole time shouting at each other from one side to the other! Knobs:rolleyes:

I wonder if the persons you both witnessed today went home and posted about the strange people they witnessed today?

You mean the quite bloke downstream catching fish!

Only clueless, perma-stoned a***hol*s (Tory Grandees now) wore those things (pretty females, exempt), then, and now...

I fish a small river. Best thing I ever read was by John Bailey. It was about not doing anything, or taking a step, before concidering the cosequences. Went from not catching to catching. Also learnt to love a really strong wind, lots of noise, bushes and trees blowing every where, all natural, I do not have to be so carefull, knees and back not good enough for jungle warefare stuff. Bad night for spelling.

Well, at the least public mention of some names, the Real Anglers deem it best to clock-out too.

As ever,

No, actually, I meant the self righteous, blow smoke up each others asses people that like to judge other people on their methods, techniques and way of doing things.

If they're happy sat on the skyline not catching or having a chat that's a bit "audible", leave them be. I find comments like yours to be nothing short of snobbery in the least. I can't help feeling there's a masking of feelings of inadequacies either.

It's only fishing for gods sake!

Love it very funny:)

Stealth and concealment - an 'anglers' skill, not in the repertoire of the majority of 'fishermen', and no doubt the reason for that well known saying 90% of the fish are caught by 10% of the fishermen. I had a similar occurance on opening day to yourself Clive. While sat quietly, tucked behind some marginal scrub a couple of chaps wandered down the opposite bank and stopped directly opposite me. One of those occurances when you pray they move on, but no such luck for me. They began to set up there tackle on the top of the bank, some 15' above water level with nothing but a bright blue summer sky behind them - this on a low clear river some 18" deep. What happened next was classic - the guy dropped down the bank and began modifying his swim with bankstick and boot, swishing here and kicking there until everything within a 6' radius was flattened. Proud of his achievements out went the 5oz feeder - cadooooooosh! - into said 18" of low flowing river ( where a 2SSG link would have held solid ) and he sat back to enjoy his day.

I know for a fact that some of my fellow anglers who frequent this river would have been less than impressed by such events - to the point where words would have been said. Not for me - i just watched, slightly baffled and if totaly honest - quite amused by their antics. The river at this point is some 50yds wide and i have no doubt those two chaps had no idea i was sat directly opposite them. The barbel just a rod length out couldn't see me so i doubt they could. If you had seen my recent thread you might have expected me to launch an assault with the 20mm boilies but i hope most realised that was just a bit of fun, some of my very good friends have access to this bank and it is a tactic reserved just for them. ;)
