speedia prices!

Whats going on with the price of speedia's on e bay, would I be that disadvantaged by getting a trudex for £30 -£40 less, chuck in a tatty old box with a speedia and name yer price! Yes I know that they are the dogs gonads but are they seriously worth over £100? tin hat just going on!
 
Over £100 for a Speedia..amazing. I have got two, the last one from e bay only a year ago, in great condition and £45, so I think you may have just picked a time when several people are all after one at the same time. Trudex's and Rapidex's are usually about the same price. Originally consider more sophisticated than the Speedia, but I prefer the Speedia. I picked up a Royal Avon Supreme on E bay not to long ago for £70 and thought that a bit pricey. It really depends on how many others are after an item.
The best bet on e bay, is to use a snipe bidding programme, enter what you want to bid and let it place the bid a couple of seconds before the end. People getting into little bidding wars pushes up prices to silly levels, but always glad to see it happening when I am selling!
 
Chris, I agree with Pete about the bidding style but as far as the reel goes I would settle for a Trudex...If you get one in nice condition and "run it in" with a fine oil you will have a great little reel. If you don't like lineguards then take it off. If like me you don't mind a lineguard then look at the Rapidex's as well.

Several months ago, a mint, boxed, Wide Drum De Luxe Speedia fetched £150 or £155 on Ebay. Made me smile, as I have one like it, but even better. Crazy prices. Pete is right - there are some guys out there with plastic melting or wallets on fire at the moment.
 
Mind you, when you actually think about it, I would expect the Avon Royal I brought, which was in really good condition, came with both of the spare pins (a nice little extra that Avon Royals have) in tact and never used, to be still around in another ten years of regular use. Some of the "modern" threadline reel cost as much if not more and I can't see them lasting a single lifetime, let alone two or three like most pins manage. Which is why of course the companies went out of business. No point in selling something once, when you can sell the same thing ten times over, by building in obsolescence and changing the name and colour every few years.
Look what happened when cars started to be built that actually lasted for 200,000 miles, the taxpayer had to give money to people to get them to scrap them in order to keep the lines running in Korea.

i've never paid more than £36 for a speedia ,but then again i've brought a few dog rough one's (sometimes on perpose ,sometimes not ) trouble is speedia's had a reputation as the 'underground' pin too have ,but they've acquired the reputation of being a ""Barbel Reel"" and therefore extra Valuable .

most people who have more than one centrepin ,will inveriably have one for special occations (even if its just for their own benifit too use in private or too impress others ) ,a good solid bearings reel as a general workhorse (okuma's fit this bill nicely) used when testing new waters and often missused and abused because it can take it & is readliy available to replace or get spares ,and their secret pleasure / comfort reel (speedia) which they often reach for first.

i know i'm guilty of this ,i will take my okuma too new places first ,then on subsequent visits take one of my speedia's or aerials ,i do tend too have reels for certain situations and rivers conditions .I don't have a "special" reel at the moment but do plan on getting one this year as my final reel for which i'm willing too pay a small fortune for ,normally i set myself a limit / budget for my purchases and often sell other centrepins too help with the cost ,you can't let yourself get carried away ,as those who are willing too pay silly money (over the odds) will always beat you or bancrupt you ,best too just wait for the next one ,a bit like buses really miss one and another will eventually come your way ,keep watching waiting too pounce .and you might just catcha decent one at a decent price .

I am clearly a poor relation as I only have two centrepins; The Rapidex and a Speedia.

I have owned both since the mid sixties, still in their original boxes.

I dropped the Rapidex on the concrete at the side of Marlow weir, in the days when one could wade out onto the sills, and the chip in the spool I mended with plastic metal. That took a time to rub down and to get the reel spinning properly.

My Speedia was serviced some years back by The Mill Tackle Co and had two new rivets made. Incredibly reasonable cost of £25. More recently when I was visiting Edward Barder his fellow worker, Colin Whitehouse, spent some time getting rid of some burrs on the reel seat. No charge whatsoever. Wonderful reels and wonderful people.

so what does make the speedia better than a trudex in a legering use that makes it more desirable and more expensive,is it just the fad of the moment?
 
The Trudex is a not-so free-running, just about okay clunker that doesn't command much love and which you wouldn't mind too much if you left on the bank or had nicked by marauding Vizigoths. The Speedia, on the other hand, is a very different matter.
 
Seldex? Oh dear. Let's just say that, if the Viziigoths appeared on your river, you would make the effort to gift-wrap it for them...
 
I bow to your superior knowledge, please forgive me , I will never mention the seldex again!! I'm on the speedia hunt!
 
There's a very tidy one on eBay at the moment, boxed too. Not a deluxe, which only really matters if you are using it with a float. The ratchet tentioner is a handy feature un the wide drums for when the water's pushing through a bit more than normal. I reckon that boxed one will get about eighty quid, especially with all the current speedia talk going on right now.

I recently got one for £25 on ebay. Had a smudge of pink paint on the drum which wiped off with a damp cloth. Spins perfectly and is in fine condition. This was only a week or so ago.

I think if you look back through ebay's completed listings you get a better sense of the average price, rather than these blips that occur from time to time.

cor, strike a light....just watched the tale end of an auction on e-bay for a Speedia.....went up like a rocket in the last seconds ending up at 82 quid !!!! Too rich for me, not that I was bidding, more than happy with my Trudex and Rapidex's..
 
Must be boxed and mint for anybody to pay that. There is one listed at present with a BIN price of £40 if anybody needs a Speedia. Here
