It does change though Chris so I wouldn't give up hope just yet, living in oxford our rivers were pretty much the first to be hit hard by otters and crayfish. Very few barbel being caught or ever seen, but the last few years on the Cherwell and the Thames i've seen barbel spawning for the first time since i've lived here(16 years)
Downside is some of my favourite areas that were very quiet now have pig bloody ignorant barbel anglers on the bandwagon
