Thought i would post this on the main forum for those not familiar with fishing spate rivers - take a look at the graph below:

Didn't manage to get out today but i've fished through a couple of these events over the last few years and it's an awesome sight - rising over 5 metres in a few hours. Sqeaky bum time for anyone living along the river valley last night . . . . .

edit - you need to be logged in to see the pic!

Andrew, I am logged in, but I can't see a picture, nor any link or other means of seeing it....mind you, we are talking me here, which may explain things :D

Cheers, Dave.

Mr Gaskell and myself fished through the last 'highest recent' 5.6m up in 2008 - crazy how fast it comes up - we watched it rise 12' in a couple of hours!

Hellfire...it rose and fell ten feet in one twenty four hour period on the 23rd

Good trotting weather to my mind....me trotting rapidly away from the river across the field :D

Cheers, Dave.

Nice one Chas - how did you do that?

saved the image to my computer then click on attachments which is 2 to the right of the smilies!

you then download click back on this page then go back to attach a bit tricky at 1st,so i'll test another below:eek:

I bet that was fun mate how many times did you av to move up the bank.

Was a fun day - arrived early doors and it was running at normal level, after an hour it started to rise ( you know the score with the rising ribble floods in summer - gave up due to the amount of debris! ) had a brew and watched it rise 3m+, then realised it was due to burst it's banks any minute and our cars were parked 1/2 mile from the escape route - probably looked like a special stage of a rally as we drove off rather quickly!

hi andy, quite right , you just dont realise how quick water moves up the banking, yet it can flow fairly slowlyit just creeps up,

How quick after a big flood does the rubbish stop coming down, with the amount it ran off today I would have thought it would be fairly clear, but there was still loads of weed coming down.

Not speaking for anyone else but for me - i fish as tight to the near bank as possible in a big flood - best way to avoid all the cr*p - i can't be doing with my rig getting wiped out by weed and stuff every minute!

you need to time it right in a flood either the hour you get at the start of the flood before the debris start to arrive!
it can then be hit and miss as they seem to munch before seeking cover from the debri. then there's the peak of the flood when the majority of debri as gone through. i've always found that if its been in flood and i mean a big flood if it rises again it is normally cleaner and usually fishing well.

other river's may differ but as the graphs shows the ribble being a spate river rises and falls fast.i don't find this productive you need it steady running off nicely at a nice pace!
that's my take on it anyway.
