SONIK Specialist Barbel

hi all,
I have read a number of reviews regarding the SONIK SPECIALIST BARBEL rods, all of who
report that for the Money these rods are amazing ,some even suggesting that the rods are very close to the DAIWA Infinity
Barbel but at a unbelievable cost .
With this in mind I thought I would take the plunge and get myself a pair so I could make my own opinion.
I purchased pair of the 12’ 2 lb version at £99 for both.
The rods arrived yesterday ,and after opening them I was amazed to see what appears to be an absolute bargain.
The Action I would describe as through with a lot of power in the butt section. The reel seat and rings look good with single guides on the top section and Double on the Butt ,the cork is of reasonable quality ,I have seen worse on Some High end rods.
The top section has a fixed fitting for an isotope.
All in all I am very impressed with cosmetics of the rod and amazed at its price, the proof of the pudding ,of course will be how they perform on my local Trent.Once I have put them through their paces ,I will report back.

Hi Adam
I bought a Sonic 2.0 barbel rod last year in the AD sale , not used it yet ! But for £45 you do wonder how they make them for the money ? I copied the isotope tube idea put them on the Dark Carbons I bought of you last year and using a shorter 15mm isotope it work’s brilliant.
I‘ll be waiting on your report , although I should do my own !

"You get what you pay for" was the mantra used by my late father, alluding to the fact that you have to pay a lot of money to get anything decent. I don't agree. I think there are many products (not just angling items) that offer unbelievable value for money. The trick is knowing which ones!
Look forward to your review on the Sonik rods! 😊

I use the sonik carp rod for pike fishing, I think they are really good for money. Was thinking their barbel rod as well, unfortunately, they only do 12ft, which too long for my like, wish they will come with a 11ft version.

Hmm, I do not know how many of us go sea fishing, but I do, and when Soniks first appeared on the beach scene as cheap rods they were snapped up, and the guys that bought them soon discovered that “snapped up “is what they did, regularly.
Their reputation was soon in virtual tatters.

I have not seen any in use for ages and for all I know they manufacturers may have learnt from their earlier mistakes.I will keep my eyes open on here for some reviews, good luck with them, they may be good value for their very cheap price.

I hope they are as good as you hear that they are.

The same debate happens in all angling fields. I once went on a trip salmon fishing and several decent anglers had Shakespeare multi piece fly rods that are very good value for money. By day 4, 4 had broken and folk were swapping sections to try and make one complete rod !

I used 2 of my mate’s old Guideline rods and even though I’m a pretty rubbish salmon angler I didn’t break either of them.

I bought a Sonik 12’ 1.75tc barbel rod from AD when it was on offer a few years ago and although it has not had any tussles with barbel, I can certainly vouch for its playing action and power thanks to the nuisance pike that seem to take a liking to my legered meat baits. 😡 A pleasure to use and a bargain price - what’s not to like!🙂

Thanks Adam

Could be a cheap option for a third big bream/tench rod while I wait until I can afford another Torrix

Hi all,
I managed to take out and test the SONIK BARBEL SPECIALIST rods on my local Trent .
with a 2 lb test curve rating they were very capable of casting my running ledger rig ,with a 3 oz
lead ,15 mm Bollie using a Braided hook link and size 6 hook. I would say they would easily cope with leads or feeders up to 4 oz. Numerous casts throughout the day over the top of balls of pellet made ground bait were made with ease,
after six hours of watching the rod tips nothing was happening. Just as the light was fading I had my first fish followed by another one 10 mins later. Both fish were low doubles ,and put a lovely bend in the rod,but had plenty of reserve
in the butt section. No more fish were caught ,but “Happy days “ I was well chuffed with the 2 fish I had caught.
Overall the rods performed well and felt good in the hand balanced with OKUMA AVENGER 4000 reels ,
If I was picky ,I did notice a few factory made blemishes in the carbon most likely from the rolling process where the carbon sheet overlaps. For the price of £49.99 each I really don’t know how SONIK can can do it .Not sure if I will hang on to them as my Century Armalite MK3 are my go to rods now, especially the 1.75 version.
I didnt know the price of the SONIK rods I would have thought they would be up there with the likes of the Free Spirit
Barbel tamers at a similar price point .

Hi Richard ,
I would but I don't no how to transfer it to that section.
Perhaps Andy could do it ??
