Small hooks for Barbel

Philip Howes

Hey,

A lot of Barbel in my usual haunts seem to be getting cuter and cuter with their feeding and shy away from large baits, pellets and any big beds of bait.

Im going to try a different approach with much smaller baits and particles. I was wondering if anyone can suggest a suitably strong 16/18 size hook that will cope with double figure fish in fast flows.

Also what kind of hooklink material would people siggest with such small baits and hooks?

Cheers
Phil :D

You could try the Pallatrax hooks in the smaller sizes Phil. Very strong. Very similar to ESP Raptors but they go to smaller sizes (down to 16 I think).

I wouldn't want to be going smaller than that!

MMMM? why not look at it another way, use something like a size 10 and use a long very fine hair setup, used to work well, absolutely no reason why it wouldn,t work now!

Haven't tried the Pallatrax yet but I've been given a pack of the 16s and they are a proper size 16 size but look a bit shiny. So many hook brands are huge for their supposed sizes but not these.

I've been using the new Drennan Specimen Plus in sizes 16 and 12 this season and they are great hooks. Again a nice small size, matt finish and very strong and sharp with a small barb. Would recommend them.

Pallatrax for me too (14's and 16's) and if you're worried about the shine (which I'm not), colour them in with a marker pen.

phil, good question, if ure fishing river ,with a fast flow, you usaully get away with 12, 10 s depending its maggots ure using, because of the fast flow ,fish normally snatch at it because they dont have time to check the bait, other wise some other fish has it, but if its a slower moving river the bait going down with ure hook behavours differently, so will the hook bait, ???, so scaling down meen you will have to keep that line tight espeacially trotting down 30/40 yrs down river, then your problem really starts here as you will find you start to bump fish off due to hook size and distants ure stricking, but if you do connect then ure laughing as long as you hook them in the the corner of there mouths, kk, as mentioned by neil powney them pallarax , spot on mate, how it help you eddie, as i fish the severn and it has some very fast water, were the river narrow up, i useing topper floats heavy

Cheers guy,

Im wanting to fish single grains of fake hemp and maybe single particles from a pigeon conditioner mix. Would I be better hair rigging on a long hair then or on the hook do you guys recon?

I wont be trotting the baits, I want to fish them over small beds of particles.

Cheers for the help guys, ill have to have a look at the pallatrax hooks

Last time I did this sort of thing, I used a size 10 (balanced with dark foam) with multiple hairs. I used Kryston Bgey ( http://www.kryston.com/bogey.php ) to attach two hemp grains onto several hairs.
The balanced size 10 meant I could use a decent strength rig. The balanced hook and multiple hairs got around the cute fish.

Fished those SS's all the time on the B. Avon, in days gone by. Had up to 200 fish in a season on them. Spades are essential with small hooks.

In small sizes drennan super specialists or super spades take some beating, as do the pallatrax hooks although these are quite shiny and seem a little larger than the drennan hooks in the same size!
