Slugs for bait

Chris Allcock

Senior Member
Has anyone had any joy using slugs for barbel, cos there is a boat load in my garden, it is a natural food resource for them I know, here comes the saft bit of the question... Can I freeze them ready for the 16th?

Thanks

I've been thinking the same Chris. Have you got a bait fridge/freezer or are you brave enough to tell the wife that they are in the kitchen freezer? ;)
lets us know how you get on!

Funny enough it was the mrs that put em in for me, lol, she's use to finding things that don't belong in there, like rats for my snake and dead bait for piking. Will let u kno.

Haha, good girl. I suspect when they defrost you will be left with a pile of snot, but unless you try you will never know, will be interested to know the result...cheers, Kev

Let us know how you get on with your experiment Chris, both the freezing and the idea of slugs as barbel bait.

I have had a minimal amount of luck using them for chub, but it seemed to be a stalking bait primarily. If you see a surface cruising chub and cast a big free-lined slug just behind him, he will likely turn and grab it. However, using them as static bottom baits has never worked for me.

I have often wondered if that was purely down to lack of perseverance on my part, so look forward to your results.

Cheers, Dave

Agree with that, Dave. Free lining or dropping a slug in by a bush is an immediate chub take. And it has to be a black field slug. Legering slugs never worked for me. As for freezing, freezing strawberries doesn't work because of the high water content and I suspect it will be the same for slugs. You can probably preserve them better in brine or vinegar, but you may have to blanche them first. Store them with the pickled eggs and serve as a delicacy for guests. If the guests like them then you are onto a winner. If they go down well, one of the bait suppliers will have them on the shelves in a trice, in sealed packs at about £5 for 6 slugs, oh, and there will be special additives specific to each species of fish. So lots of options. Before you know it, there will be 30 quids worth of different flavoured slugs on your garage shelf.

Result!!!!! The slugs are thawed out without turning in to snot, but the three snails which were froze solid thawed out and came back to life haha, now that's what you call suspended animation! Hope there ain't no animal rights reading this

You froze snails and they came back to life??????? Thats cryogenics in its purest form I can see you becoming the richest man in the world lol

Barbel up close and personal part 1 DVD has footage of a nice double being caught on a slug. Simply hook it through the tail and 'plops your uncle'.

Don,t ignore snails, the fish in my pond prefer them, whether crushed shell or whole, easy to keep, damp, dark place, with plenty of green stuff to eat, always fresh.

Yes Chub love 'em so you might have to be selective, John Wilson demonstrated the worth of Black slugs, and caught ....with a tree branch for a rod.

Black slug and lobworm cocktail , on a size 4 in a flood is a good bait . I have caught a number of barbel on this combination . For some reason the other colour slugs don't seem to work . If you think about it the fish will be used to tons of slugs and worms washed in by the high water so will scoff them without suspicion . Garlic Spam is still the boss bait though :D

Seen a few total fishing programmes years ago with Matt Hayes bagging up on chub using slugs

On a river I have fished, when in flood, the Barbel can be heard and sometimes seen 'Slurping' Slugs form the overhanging vegitation ! Mr Shipman will back me up on this one !!
