shimmy 4000d

Try steve Hayward mate I think he was selling a couple

Better going with the OC, review of both on lumbland, although the review is 6000OC

Lumbland: reels

I have a pair of 8000d and a pair of 12000OC for pike and catting and must say both are superb, I prefer the bail arm on the OC, much stronger.

Got the 4000D when it first came out - nice reliable reel. But - no spare spool. Quite like the new Aero 4000 FA baitrunner - you get a spare spool. Approx same weight (the 4000FA 20g heavier). Picture below:

Is the bailarm just not stronger because it's the larger model maybe 12000D is the same ?.

Not all its cracked up to be!

Just a general opinion on the 4000D of which I have a pair; personally I think the front drag is ****! It doesn't really have micro adjustment and is reminiscent of a 'snatchy' rear drag baitrunner, which is not suitable for hit and hold type situations, where you rely on the drag to just give that little bit under extreme pressure! I often find myself adjusting the drag mid fight and for a reel in this price range that it not good!

Also if fishing at range, and with the baitrunner engaged, against a large bow in the line between rod tip and feeder, again the baitrunner drag can become snatchy on a tight setting and thus rendering it useless.

Anyone else have issues?

No, its a totally different design, the d has a fairly thin one pie e bail whereas the oc has a more traditional bail arm made from thicker metal, 12000d is the same as 800d in terms of build.

Bought me a shimmy 8000 oc , very smooth, ticking clutch and robust bail arm, just getting the handle converted to a wooden one and thats me happy! Climax tackle £129

I got a pair of the 4000D's that i have been using for a few years for the Teme, Wye and Lower Severn (when not in flood)..... I can't fault them. Only annoying (and costly) thing was having to buy a spare spool. I have had no problem with the front drag system or the baitrunner system.

You may struggle finding some Shimano Baitrunners as i was looking for some 6000 size baitrunners a couple of months back and everywhere seemed to be sold out and awaiting stock. A few traders i spoke to, including Alans in Worcester, said that the Shimano Rep was saying "no new stock until September". Whether this situation has changed since i ordered my reels then i am not sure? The Shimano offices have closed near Evesham and i was told that this started to coincide with the stock level problems (if this is wrong then fair but don't shoot the messenger) and also haven't Shimano been brought by Normark or someone?

In fact i was shown the 2014 Trade catalogue and the stnadadrd catalogue and a number of the reels had an "X" drawn over it and when i asked in the tackle shop they said the Rep was coming in weekly and crossing off reels out of this 2014 catalogue that had been discontinued etc.

Seeing as it was not even half way through 2014 when i saw this does that not sound a bit strange? Why put all these reels in your catalogue if you are going to discontinue them not long after?

Shimano 3500b built to last cant fault them best clutch I have ever used.

It's fairly standard practice. You find most of the mainstream angling brands bring out the next years catalogue (though not necessarily the customer catalogues) and products post August/pre-Christmas. They generally know what's likely to be discontinued way in advance. Sometimes it's because a product hasn't sold well, sometimes because it's due an "update" as part of the usual product cycles. You usually find the stuff that's discontinued and not selling well starts to appear at discount prices in the big mail order retailers in Aug/Sep. The better sellers that get discontinued simply vanish from the shops in late spring/early summer. The few places that still have stocks of the better sellers will generally be the those with the most expensive prices.

Normark didn't buy Shimano. Shimano bought the Normark brand name.

You obviously used a wrong Un there Neil. Apart from people who have trouble looking after their gear. Ref bail arm. You won't find a better one. I've had well over a hundred trent barbel on mine, drag and baitrunner were exceptional every time.
I have a spare 4000d that's only been on the bank twice. What's the going rate for 2nd hand? As I could be tempted to part with one of my 3?
