Shimano stellar

I am in the very fortunate position of my wife offering to get me a shimano stellar 2500 for my birthday! What I need to know is what is the difference in the model numbers, I know it’s an awful lot for a reel but it’s a once in a lifetime purchase! Cheers Barry

Barry,
I’m not familiar with the Stellar but can’t see that the sizing will differ from other models, the 2500 will be a good sized reel for float fishing for Roach, Tench, Bream etc. but if you are wanting it for Barbel on rivers like the Upper Medway, Kennet, Wye, Hants Avon and the like I would plumb for the 4000 if at all possible.
Regards
Bill

Thanks for that Bill, I mainly want it for rolling so was thinking of the smaller reel but I will have a look at the 4000, regards, Barry

For that money you could buy a 'Rolling Pin', and find your rolling/trundling/freelining even more enjoyable. You'd also have enough cash left over to buy a nice example of an old Shimano 'Match' reel, for waters that don't allow braid (which I find is necessary when using a 'Rolling Pin').

I think the premium you'll pay for a stella above a sustain or a stradic ci4 is just not worth it - unless you're planning on taking it spinning on the seas. keep the difference and buy a more expensive club book, or a weekend away on the Trent. I have a stradic ci4 4000 and its the perfect small barbel reel, could even go to 3000 if you wanted too.

But to get back to your question, my understanding is the sizes will be the same as all other shimano models. Where you have HG in model name it denotes High gearing, so a 6,2:1 (too much id suggest). And i think the SH - must denote shallow spool, as the line cap i'm looking at on that model isn't a lot. So if you're convinced - get a STL4000FJ, i think... that holds 180 yards of .3 mono

Hi Barry

I have a Stella 4000, I bought it with the same purpose as you want. I suspect a 2500 would be too small and the weight difference is minimal so my advice is to get the 4000 with more capacity and a bigger spool.

Cons:
1. They’re expensive and maybe not worth the difference over a cheaper Shimano
2. They don’t have an anti-reverse lever, so you have to use the drag
3. Spare spools are around £100

Pros:
1. The drag is fabulous
2. It’s a beautiful reel and a work of art
3. What price a Rolls Royce?

if you’re not paying for it my advice would be to get one
