shimano or fox

I'm not an out and out pin nut Rich although I do have a couple of nice ones however I think if you wanted one reel for every occasion the Walton will foot the bill.

Using it as a straight pin you can trot a float with it or you can fish it static off a couple of rod rests in the margins using the ratchet as an alarm, however by using the twisting foot you could if you wished fish mid stream or even far bank on larger rivers with a feeder and the rod up high or you could even trundle a bait as it was designed. It's a versatile bit of kit and if I was limited to only ever owning one reel for the rest of my life it would be this one.......Provided it had got the beefed up foot mechanism.

"To a previous post, I'm not sure what Fox are good at TBO"

Their armapoint Carp hooks SSC and LCS are the best of their kind on the market, the Evolution brollies are brilliant.Their adjustalevel chairs are excellent and I have had one of those and a predator net for 10 years. So they get some things right.

I remember many moons ago when Fox were one of the first to start buying kit from China. The quality control in Chinese factories was completely non existent at that time (much like now I guess ), and it nearly drove my local tackle shop owners nuts :D

They would have a more than 50% return on some items, with angry customers returning things like rod pods (the very first of the modern pods with plastic connecting sections) every day. They would march in and empty the box on the counter, to reveal a pile of bits...sort of a DIY self assy. kit....only it shouldn't have been :D:D

They are at least a bit better than that now :p, though why Fox, Nash, and many other resellers STILL insist on getting a bad name by using the poor anglers as testers for new kit, which means that only the Mk 2 version is worth a light (if then ) is quite beyond me. I guess the answer is that there are enough 'must have the latest gear' tackle tarts out there to make it a viable method

Cheers, Dave.

Not just fishing tackle, it always amazes me that people queue for days for the latest bit of electronic wizardry only to be used as unpaid testers; some of them even get some sort of perverse pleasure from finding bugs in the software which have to be sorted with fixes.

Tucked away in the garage somewhere I have got one of the original fox barbel rods, 1.5lb twin tip, Avon and spliced in quiver. Quite a nice rod as it happens and almost a twin, even down to the ringing, for a Harrison specialist I regularly use.

Shimano XTEA 5000 bait runners 'reel' class. Perfect size, look great and will last a life time. Got two that work on Torrix 1.75 and 1.5's. Excellent combination:)

have to agree with you, very happy with mine although a little heavy.

I have a Fox Warrior carp rod and it feels horrid retrieving just the lead, let alone fish and I have a Shimano Stradic Specimen rod that i can't fault....

Re XTEA 5000's I have a couple too, and yes a real work horse of a reel; however as with other rear drag reels, the clutch is just too snatchy, and especially on a tight setting. Give me front drag anytime; this is what Fox tried to achieve with the FS7000 and they nearly succeeded apart from the build quality:)

Best barbel baitrunner reel currently on the market is the Shimano 4000D (for small to medium sized rivers), just a shame I had to pay £70 for two spare spools!
