Severn Rivers Trust - River Severn Conference

Nearest I ever got to a Jaguar was Dudley Zoo, couldn't get my gear in a car version. Driver's day off Saturday Will, it'll have to be the Au Pair! You mistook my new White 45m Boilies for Golf balls Will, hence the confusion.

I don't bother with the work mobile any more during office hours Pete. Kept getting business calls while I was playing a fish.
I had the same problem mate, solved by dropping the phone in the river and sending the missus out to work......

Ive just been listening to Mark Everard talking about dace, the Wear record and that how they are a species introduced to the river because they are not normally found this far north. Wrong!

Dace are indigenous to the rivers Tyne, Wear and Tees. Talking to the old Durham anglers when I first moved to Durham in the early 70's they spoke then of big shoals pre war days, even old Izaak himself wrote of fishing the Wear for its dace. Dace can also be found in many of the small Solway rivers and streams, waters that have never been pike fished, the usual reason given for the introduction of such species.

Pleased the day/event was a success though.

Thoroughly enjoyed the conference on Saturday. Brilliant speakers and a great chance to meet up with people during the breaks. The Severn Rivers Trust should be congratulated for putting this day on - good things will come out of it.

While not for a second doubting that Dace may well be native to the Wear I am not sure about Izaak writing about fishing for Dace up there. I don't think he personally ever got to fish in Northern rivers and doesn't mention Dace in relation to the Wear in his book. Charles Cotton would have fished up there so may have mentioned it in his aditional chapters on fly fishing with which I am not as familiar.

It might be a good idea to let Mark Everard know about this as I am sure he would be interested. I'll ask Tony Bostock for an e mail for him and pass it along if you are interested.
