Sensas Easyloop knot strength

Senior Member
I've just bought a Sensas Easyloop gadget. Seems to do just what it says on the tin - ties loops easily!

Now, I'm not too bothered about knot strength since the main reason I wanted one was to tie loops for the end of hair rigs so the knot won't really be under much pressure.

However, I also use loops in other fishing eg. for hooklinks when float fishing so I was wondering if anyone had done any testing of the knot strength? ie. how much does the knot that the Easyloop ties weaken the line?

In my (unscientific) testing so far, it always breaks at the knot, which is OK I suppose, as long as it's breaking at around the same breaking point of the unknotted line. I'll be doing more tests involving a set of scales to measure breaking point.

Anyone got any similar experiences?

the knot i use is the one advocated by dave chilton called suprise suprise the loop knot which is the strongest loop knot you can use.much stronger than the figure of eight.dave knows more about knots than anybody.

i've had carp to 18lb on a figure of 8 loop, but i do knot it twice not once.:D

I use the figure 8 for all my hooklengths and I've yet to have one let me down, I use the same knot for hair loops and use a surgical skin picker, (think really fine crochet hook) to form the knot.
I'm not familiar with the Semo gadget but if it works for you then it's good enough.

The main reason I got any kind of tool was because I was struggling to make hair loops as small as I wanted them. Sounds like I need a "surgical skin picker" rather than an Easyloop!!

Hi all,i use a preston loop tyer, same as the sensas one just a little cheaper and you get 2.Makes small loops and very quick and easy!! Cost about £3 for 2. I have found that as long as the knot is moist it wont break!

I use figure of 8 knot too & never had it let me down. Most of my hair rig loops are made from braid - a very easy knot for this is the standard noose (half granny not pulled all the way through) pulling it to desired size then clinching this with another half granny pulling up into the original noose. Pull tight & should never let you down.

Cheers, Jon

PS hope this make sense as I am not used to explaining the wrappings of line

The perfection loop looks similar to the Kreh loop, but with less turns.

I came across this whilst looking for how to tie the perfection loop:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAe_gnaFkMw

The table at the end was what interested me:

Knot Tested Breaking Load
Unknotted Nylon 100.0 %
Kiwi Loop Knot 94.8 %
Blood Loop Knot 58.6 %
Figure Eight Knot 34.0 %

34% for the Figure Eight knot! That's terrible!

The kiwi loop is described here:

As you said robin the strength of the knot is not important for the loop in a hair rig. I always use a single loop knot for a hair rig or a double (surgeons) for loops on hooklengths. If you are after 100% knot strength try the bimini twist knot.
geoff

Like Dave Hall, I use the double figure of eight knot for all of my nylon knots, at this moment in time I have not had a knot failure.

Check the bins at your local hospital, there's loads of stuff gets thrown out with the surgical waste.

If you don't fancy that you could use a stringer needle.:D

Looking at all those surgical instruments on the link, I notice that most of them appear to be made from stainless steel, and yet they are amazingly cheap, and virtually all of them are labelled 'single use'

I guess all our forceps are sourced from medical suppliers, but are they all used items we get that are (hopefully) sterilised and sold on ?

I don't wonder the NHS is going bust

Cheers, Dave.

Robin,
I use the Seymo and find it a great bit of kit (assuming you are using the one which looks like a giant mutated crochet needle?). I too use it for hair loops as my clumsy great mitts can't really tie small loops of such uniform size and neatness.
I have also used it for hooklength loops whilst float fishing with no problems.
For hooklengths whilst Barbelling I favour a simple overhand loop as I like this to be bigger than the Seymo will tie..........

I should just say my quip about checking the bins was strictly tongue in cheek.

The forceps you buy from the tackle shop are brand new and made in china by the million, the tackle trade, along with other hobby suppliers buy them before they go through the sterilisation and packing stage, they may even be seconds but they wont be used.....Used items are strictly controlled and inventoried and have to be disposed of by a specialist waste disposal firm and are subject to a weekly collection along with the rest of the surgical waste.

Disposable instruments have become the norm because it is cheaper to use single use instruments than it is to pay people to operate a cleaning and sterilising service, It is also one less way for hospital acquired infections to be passed on.
The cost of those instruments is peanuts compared to some of the drug therapy's which some people are on I was aware of several drugs which were over £1000 per dose, and that might have involved two or three doses a day for several weeks. Bear in mind I have been away from that world for ten years I can't imagine its got any cheaper.
The drug companys really are the robber barons of the medical world.
