Rolling pellets

Is the method of rolling pellets as effective as rolling meat? All replies welcome.

Never tried it, but for me, one of the advantages of rolling meat, certainly on the Severn and Teme, is that the hook is completely buried in the bait, and with nothing else on the line, there is very little chance of getting snagged up.

I find if I use plasticine, or putty on the line I constantly get snagged on rocks/weed etc.

Best thing I can suggest is give it a go.....
I know the lads that match fish quite often fish a feeder that 'rolls' once empty, meaning they are basically rolling pellets....

Rolling Pellets do work as does, cheese, pastes, maggots and casters and so on. Consistentcy in catching can depend on what other main baits are used static on a fishery. Also rolling presentation can be important in hooking the bait and allowing it run through naturally and smoothly. Can be very difficult to get a clean run through the area if you try and hair rig it!

Soft hookable pellets then I think shall be the way forward.

Hi Chris,

It can be very successful in the right conditions.

Back end floods being particularly good. It's surprising how few times you get hooked up on weed. I would refer to it as more of a "trundle" than a roll but the same rules apply. I would let it wait for a few minutes if it stops before giving a gentle pull to get it moving again. It is far more likely that it is the lead that is stuck rather than the hook. More often than not, the take comes as it starts to move again.

I had a lot of big Royalty fish in the mild wet winters of 2006/2007 using the method but was pretty much the only one doing it at the time. Give it a go and I would definately recommend you persevere with it.

Good luck,

Jeff

Yeah nearly spot on! Gary Porter was the first to start rolling hair rigged pellets in the summer of that year and was highly successful taking multiple barbel catches, especially in the Gt Weir where it has a clear gravel run down.
Then others got wind of what he was doing and they just copied what Gary was doing! Simple really!;)

Which river were you thinking of trying rolling pellets on Chris?

I honestly don't rate your chances of rolling anything down the middle Severn if there is either a hook point exposed or you have anything on the line in the form of a weight....

If you do try it, I hope you have a good stock of hooks....

Chris. I had a lot of success rolling boilies in flood conditions so no doubt it will work with pellets as hook bait.

Similar in many ways to what Jeff says above. I wrote an article about it for the Barbel Society Site.

Basically I used a feeder filled with pellet and boilie and a pellet groundbait. Get the feeder so it just holds bottom under normal conditions.

Casting upstream and letting it hit bottom. Fish with a large bow in the line, rod high and pointing behind the feeder line.

Basically let the water pressure on the line move the bait downstream. The rod height/amount of line out, will determine the rate of progress.

It will hold sometimes and just a sharp small lift of the rod will generally get it moving again. Bites can come anytime and will generally be felt as a quick snatch or the line will start moving upstream without any sign!

Fish it until it starts to swing inside downstream.

I chose to use a firmly filled feeder that managed to have 2-3 run throughs before it emptied beacuse I wanted the barbel to find the bait in the flow. Had a lot of barbel on the method

Good luck.

There was one day when Gary phoned the shop to come out and photograph a good double. After taking the shot I set off back and I hadn't even reached the Pipes when my mobile rang, it was Gary with another double. I turned back and once again took the requisite photo before again heading back to Davis Tackle. This time I reached the Railway before getting yet another call! If I recall correctly I photographed four fish - out of a catch of eight fish on rolled pellet in an afternoon session - for him before I finally managed to get back to work.

Looking at the date of those pictures I thought he caught them during the summer following Jeff's successful Winter campaign (but that was a long time ago. :D)

As you say Nige, it was a long time ago and we can be forgetful!
However, you did write the relevant reports at the time on your own website.:p
‘Gary Porter July report 2006’....’Jeff Edisbury March report 2007’. ;)
No mention of method used, only pellet as bait. Gary wanted to keep the method quiet for a while until he cleaned up, and to which he did.
Again, I was there too with him at times watching what he was doing!:)
Won’t be the year/winter before this ie.2005/6 as Jeff wasn’t even there to my knowledge, and no mention in 'any' report for that season/year!

I am not so sure that ALL these replies were welcome Chris, but hopefully most have been helpful.
Why the F%$* do we often get the back biting, snidey comments to put others down when a guy just happens to ask a simple question.
Talk about jump on the bandwagon, gate crash someones genuine post just to stick the knife in to someone else.

:eek::(:eek::confused::eek:

Was there any need for that post?.............oh bugger, i have added to it now!

Its right though, It seems at every given oppurtunity, that Ray has to have a crack at Jeff.
Too much time on someones hands one thinks.

Hi All,

The thing is Ray, If as you say, Gary was keeping it quiet, how would I know?

That would surely make your entire argument invalid.

Oh, and I have been fishing the Royalty since 2005, but then, you would know that wouldn't you? After all, you seem to know everything else!

Best regards,

Jeff
