Bob, I`ve had a natter with the guy at Guides n Blanks, really helpful chap. Just got to measure the ring sizes then I can get going with the rebuild.
Just wondering, do you know if theres any alternatives to Threadmaster and Flexcoat for the whippings? I`ve priced it up and it`ll be more than the rest of the build put together!
Martyn,
The two brands that you mention are the ones that I prefer. I'm more experienced and confident with Flexcoat as I know what liberties I can take with it. Threadmaster has a faster cure time than that of Flexcoat at equivalent viscosities. Flexcoat tends to yellow more than Threadmaster.
You'll need quite a small quantity to do a rod - around of 5ml of each part so the small 2oz Flexcoat kit at £9 will be adequate which is around 25ml of each.
Wouldn't be tempted to use anything other than a epoxy finish unless there was a special requirement. Epoxies generally require clean conditions and any smell of polish or silicone then you are in trouble.
The finishing operation will determine whether the rod looks good or otherwise.
