Rod actions (again)

We're all using 1.75 minimum for Barbel, What's the opinions on John Bailey using the 1lb Avon from Thomas Turner for his Barbel fishing?

Spec on it suggest it can cast up to 60g with line rating up to 8lb although I think John would use 10lb

As I have said Mark, the tc is only a guide. You can have two Avons and potentially have two different rods. They may be rated the same but the actions and power may be completely different. Rods between 1lb and 1 1/4lb tc were standard for Barbel in the 80s. You wouldn't fish the Trent with a 5 oz feeder with one but for fishing close in, rolling meat or light legering, many such rods are still fine today. It’s the same with Carp rods. You dont need a 3 1/4lb tc rod to catch plenty of big Carp yet they are now almost the accepted tc for a Carp rod. What's behind it? Long casting with heavy leads. There is always another side to things. 🙂

I think finding some barbel far out weighs anything else on the Avon . I put my focus on locating fish and presenting a bait correctly above rod test curves etc ....

To quote myself from a tread "What's the difference' April 2017 on here ...
A ledger rod is any rod used for ledgering. An 'Avon' rod should be a rod with an 'Avon action... basically based on the work of Richard Walker (1950's), which culminated in the 'Avon Mk IV action'. 'Avon' refers to an action, not a fast tip action, not an 'all through' action, but a progressive action with a reasonably fast tip ... IMHumbleO. But there will be many others, possibly more learned, that will disagree with my simplification. Then again, these days any rod with a tc of 1.25lb that is being touted for ledgering may be called an 'Avon' rod, if the manufacturer reckons that'll result in increased sales. It a minefield these days... but try any fancied rod out first whenever possible, and always (always) match the rod to the strength of line you intend using.
ATVB

I
reckon Clarissa (at 44lb) was most probably caught on a MkIV Avon.
(and the best rod/s I've found in carbon to mimic that MkIV action have been Nash Elites (12ft/2lb) or Nash Tri-tips (12ft/1.5+1.75lb))
