Roach

Very enjoyable couple of days at Britford.

Very weedy in places so the half dozen chub between 3-6lb in my swim today were left alone after spending their time ignoring my hookbait whilst polishing off the loose feed.
( I didn't want to reduce from a 3.4 bottom with the weed in front of me )

Over the two days.
a dozen roach to 1lb (est)
4 Chub, 2 decent over 4lb
2 brownies.
hundreds of dace to a very good real 12oz
1 grayling
a million minnows
1 pike 4lb
4 lost pike, best seen about 14lb.

Quieter than normal late Autumn /Winter but very enjoyable

Sounds like a great couple of days,Graham. Britford has to be one of the best day ticket venues in the country if you like to float fish rivers. The view of Salisbury Cathedral, the water meadows, quality bailiff, barn owls and roe deer and the variety and quality of fish species. In the 1970's i used to stay school holidays with Stan Copperthwaite who was the bailiff and lived by the second bridge in salisbury. The eel traps were working and lads staying with him would spend the dark, full moon hours scooping them up for, the lorry to London, the next day.The deep holes behind the eel traps today were a small trout farm, Stan ran. They have long gone but the fishing is still top notch.,like it was in those days. Cannot wait to get back down there this winter for the roach.

Yes Mark. cracking venue with good mix of swims.

I was also shown a large (30-40) group of roach estimated between 1lb and 2 1/2 lb.

4 maggots dropped nearby scattered them.

They were too nervous for me to even try for them as I was leaving before the light dropped. But when the leaves turn brown, the water colours up..................

Excellent fishing Graham.
Those minnows are a right pain though.
What will those roach be like with a baited hook.

Now that my son-in-law is stationed at Worthy Down it would be rude not to have a dangle whilst I'm down that way.
Perhaps we could have a meet up some time?
Could even drag KS down (though his float fishing skills may put us to shame) ;)

The Roach at Britford are stunning !! As are the Dace !! Great venue and good value day ticket.
Saw the biggest Bream I've ever seen in the Old River below the sewage outfall, absolutely huge !!

Dave, Steve It would be good if one of the crowd could organise a day for us all.;)

Last time I was there with K and DC, I was helped a lot! I fished the swim below him and he fed the chub all day for me....:D

Very enjoyable thames session with 50 or so roach and dace, 8 perch, 3 chub, and a gudgeon.

Nothing big, but great fun. Lots of roach in the 3 - 4 oz class, nice dace to over 8oz.

I caught quite a few "mint" Roach in the 12oz - 1.1/4lb range at the weekend on the upper Thames....worm under a stret-pegged float in the edge was the winning combination - I was after Perch but these stunners are always more than welcome :)

Well Done Paul.

I'm getting lots of the smaller 3-8oz ones.

Today on the Kennet. about 12 chub to 1 and half lb and one over 3lb, lots of roach, dace and a few perch.

About 20 gobios!!!!!

About 20lb of fish. Great fun. And great to see so many.

Perching next time.

What a day on the Test!!

40 odd roach with only about 6 under the 1lb mark, most above 1.1/2lb topped with fish of 2.3 /2.2 / 1.14 /1.13/1.12./1.10 and a number around 1.12 not weighed.

My first river 2lb roach in 45 years fishing.
About 25 Grayling to 2lb
3 Chub to 4lb
8 or so brownies to about 6lb.

Heaven

Congratulations Graham that is amazing almost a once in a life time event. Any photos?

Thanks Guys. Appreciated, Still floating.

Clive, I hope I haven't got to wait another 45 years!

Pics taken on friends camera who does actual photos only.... Will scan when I get them and put up.

Big roach are magic. Haven't caught one in 30 years. I caught two though on successive trots back in 1983 on the river marden. I was using worm and some quite basic tackle. The first was 2.11 and the second went 2.12. Probably not that special back then but I remember everything about that days fishing. About 6 months ago I actually took a trip back to that very swim-probably a mistake as the river seemed so much smaller/narrower and seemed to have less "life" about it. Still magic though.
