River reports

Richard Parsons

Senior Member & Supporter
Afternoon all - just having a look (randomly) through the river reports and I notice a steep decline in the number of posts. That's generally rather than specific rivers. In years gone by there were multiple pages for most of the rivers, and many more for the bigger rivers, i.e. Trent and Severn. It's not just the catch reporting (I understand captors are less forthcoming nowadays) but a serious lack of banter, the latter usually filling in the poor catches. I don't have any evidence to back this up (before anyone asks), it's just something I've noticed recently.

Now you've raised it perhaps we will all make a conscious effort to report .
I did begin to report on the Warks Avon but with the river being painfully low all season and then dangerous water temps .. I stopped barbel fishing .

Adding to that I've not been able to catch a fish until Friday I've not had a lot to report .
I will now be updating regularly .. when I fish 🎣

I add reports as and when I get a chance to go fishing and try to add some information on the conditions. I will report on bad days too as this in my mind gives a better overview on how I have got on. No point in painting a picture of success when sometimes you can't get a bite no matter what you do.

People are protective of their fishing. It makes sense though I do understand what you're saying. Away from the big '3' rivers Barbel numbers are often low to nearly non - existent. Why would you want to draw attention to a significant catch?
Since I started fishing the middle Severn it has become a breath of fresh air with people readily reporting fish and venues and not always small fish either. Reason? Plenty of fish. Simple as that. 👍

Kinda understand but most smaller rivers have been on the decline for some years. Why would you want to draw attention to a significant catch? That's one way of looking at it - though a rather negative starting point. You could also ask; why would you not want to share a particularly fine success on a normally hard river? After all, we're all in the same forum, with a remarkably similar interest, i.e. catching barbel.

I'm not for one minute suggesting we should all be giving out a What3Words reference for every fish we catch - just that perhaps we could all contribute a little more to the river reports. It's a personal view, Andrew, and a valid question.

I agree with you Richard. I'm just describing things as they seem to be. 👍

It's probably also worth adding (particularly for any newish BFW members) that the river reports, unlike the general forum, cannot be read unless one has joined the site, i.e. has a username and password.
