River Lugg vandalism

It doesn't cost much to access the Land Registry database if you really want to know the land owner's name. Historically this sort of thing was done where planning had been refused on the basis that the punishment if any was less than the financial gain involved. These days there is more scope to seize assets of those responsible.

Back in the 1970's it was the EA's forebears doing ecological damage on this scale. The River Dearne was straightened in many places and on the banks of the River Don the EA terrorists ripped out loads of bank side trees.

Locals must know I guess. Kind of area where everyone knows everyone else.
The damage is repairable, at a cost. And that cost must be met by the perpetrator.

The fine and reparations bill has to be such that it acts a deterrent to other landowners. In this instance I reckon the reparations bill will be of several hundred thousand at least. Rightly so.

looks like fishers green after lee valley had put contractors on there just mindlessly ripping the place apart absolutely outrageous

It's being delt with at least.

Why was it left until after the damage was done? You can't tell me this destruction hadn't been observed earlier. And all the officers sat around on their arse discussing what was done, not intervening earlier when the destruction was happening. 14! What a joke. This is what we pay our licence fee for. Not that I've been asked to show mine for 35 years.

As much as I agree with your sentiments regarding licencing and the EA being largely useless (apparently they check the equivalent of just 1 farm a year!), at least they are now doing something.
What that something is however, it's another matter.
It also shows that if enough people shout about it, and we stand with the conservation groups, things can be done.

So the EA just took their time intervening, too late to stop the destruction. I want my licence fee refunded.

Natural England are the enforcement body on this instance as the site is a SSSI. And the Forestry Commission in relation to tree removal/felling.

It may be that the statutory bodies were unable to stop anything happening until the police arrived? And it's pretty common for the police not to prioritise wildlife crime as they are so thinly stretched.

Either way it looks like failure on multiple counts.

Bang on Rhys

This country seems to be schizophrenic when it comes to the environment. One side wants to chop all the trees down straighten and dredge the rivers in the name of flood prevention. The other side wants to rewild with beaver's otters etc. Typically everyone does what they want because there's little or no enforcement. This country really has turned to crap in my lifetime.

Looks like the land owner recently had planning permission refused for this land, 19 houses!
There's also plenty of pictures doing the rounds that make his 'only dead trees' statement look like a load of BS.
