River kennet hungerford?

Taking a trip to the kennet in hungerford on Friday to a private stretch, does anyone know if theres many barbel around this area of the kennet? I was going to try catch some big roach but I'm tempted to take my barbel rod too.... Has anyone fished this area and had much luck?
 
Hi men,

Tends to be a bit high up to target barbel , roach , grayling , perch and chub are your main fish , but I have spoken to someone who had a barbel above Barton Court , all but a fair time ago .

That's what I thouht :) thanks for the reply, my main target was to catch some 2lb roach so think il stick to that, was just curious if anyone has caught any barbel from around barton court area...
 
I think Mark has it about right Sean. Only fished the Barton Court stretch once, a few years back- nice spot for trotting that's for sure. Certainly haven't heard reports of barbel but you never know.
 
Thanks Howard :) going to do a nice bit of trotting for the roach and grayling hopefully the weather holds fingers crossed
 
It's a lovely stretch, you are a lucky chap, certainly the Grayling and Trout will feature I would think, but wouldn't want to set my stall out for Barbel.
 
Kennet around Hungerford

If this 'private' stretch is below Hungerford and around Avington, where the river goes under the railway line and you are on the right bank downstream, then there's a wonderful area at the lower end.

I was fortunate enough to have a day there with the venerable Martin James about 10 years ago and witnessed his astounding day with some veritable 'big' perch. I managed a solitary chub but watched the master net some 30 odd very good perch, a true red-letter day,

Hi neil I was already set out for the roach and grayling but as a keen barbel angler I was hoping there may be some around ha wishful thinking! And Mike that sounds like a nice day you had there, im sure my uncle will be perch fishing while we are there :) im looking forward to it just hope the weather is ok!

I would even give up drinking if i could fish some private beats in the Hungerford area.
Or perhaps not.....:D

Yes I know, I used to 'rep' in that area and couldn't resist walking the stretch by the town bridge, if Carling made perfect fishing venues.....the sight of those Grayling Dace Chub etc got my heart pounding.
 
It is a beautiful stretch I have been once before but this was a good few years ago now can't wait to get back there on Friday :)
