River feeder rod.

Looking for advice on a river feeder rod that would allow me to enjoy the roach that seem to have made a comeback on the Severn. The lightest rod I have for such, would be my Fox Barbel Duo which has a 5oz quiver, which is OK ish but would like something a bit more sensitive. But would cope with the odd nuisance Barbel :)

Hi Neil, dunno if you can buy lighter tips that would fit? I'm home 2moz and if you measure your push in tip I might have something you could use ( unless it's not push-in of course:))
 
Look for a 10ft bomb rod with push in tips,I use an old shakespeare sigma wand(3 tips up to 1 1/2oz) for roach on a very prolific barbel river and catch plenty of barbel(too bloody many)trying to catch some of the massive roach on the section.The rod bends to the butt and is very forgiving.I never fish heavy and rarely get broken and some of the barbel are quality fish.If the tips are a bit on the fine side you could always look for a carp style bomb rod that would have heavier tips.

Hi Terry,
The Fox is a Barbel plus, not the Duo I think I said, it has a fixed (donkey top) quiver rated at 5 oz, thanks though. :)

Funny you should mention bomb rod, I dug out an old North Western light quiver rod I have had for years but never got round to using until a couple of weeks ago, used it on a local lake for skimmers, a pleasure to use. But might not be up to the Severn.
I had a Sigma in the past, tips stored in the butt section, I don't have it now though...but again might be a bit too light, but agree a fine rod, used it on the Bristol Avon a few years back.
Agree the carp style bomb rod would have the back bone, will have a look, thanks.
 
A Shimano Barbel Duo would fit the bill admirably, if you can find one,I havent seen one for sale or quite a while. I have a couple that I use for bream, and Tench, in their normal form.
Using the rod with the quiver tip section fitted it is very sensitive, I used to target Roach on feedered hemp on the Ribble with mine, it just about coped with accidental catches of Splasher Barbs up to about 6 lb or so , but it bent right to the butt It was really over rated by Shimano as a Barbel rod, but fine for smaller species .

All of the "river" 11/13's are proper match fishing tools, i have 3 or 4 of them.
The top one would be a Connoisseur, and you can get hollow tops for them, so they will double up as a barbel rod too and they will cope with pretty much anything the rivers can throw at you.....

Cheers caps, plenty to ponder, I guess I am not alone in trying for some sort of compromise from an out an out barbel rod at times.
 
Look at drennan series 7 specialist avon rod. Brilliant perch rod and make a cracking rod for roach on the Severn
 
Yes Dean. I wondered why Neil hadn't considered that one.

Had some good wye perch on the Avon top and nice roach over 1lb on the quiver tip.

Just busted top couple of inches of the Avon top mind!
 
Yep there have been some good reports on the Drennan Avon, I do have 'in stock' a Daiwa Avon Rod which I nearly sold on here last week, and of course the rudimentary JW Avons the only problem the Daiwa it is a screw fitting for the quiver, the Drennan's fit, and I had just one rated 1.5 ounces which is a bit light.

Can't seem to find any screw in quivers, very old school I suppose, but the push in's are far better I think. Maybe it might be sensitive enough without a quiver?

There are several versions of the Drennan Avons,the 1 1/4lb is a brilliant Chub rod, but may be under-gunned if needed to chuck bigger feeders, but also may be a bit too much rod for smaller roach..... the 1 1/2lb version would be much too much rod for roach fishing, -i use my 1 1/2lb rods for floater fishing for carp......

I nearly forgot I have a Drennan Super Specialist 12' 1.75 Barbel Rod that predates the Drennan 7 and the Bowler's, it is still in it's case, and unused, I bought it when a local tackle shop closed. It's a two piece rod with a a very 'quick' action, could be just the job.
As I fish the Severn the standard Avon's might be just a bit under gunned, ideal for smaller river though.
I guess there is only one way to find out :)
