Remind me why?

Hi men ,

See the Ouse thread ..........

Otters , mink, crayfish , abstraction , pollution , and now the few barbel left in this stretch have had their cover "improved" by the EA flood defence people . I will have a look before re-joining the club , but reports are not good . One of the upper stretches had "improvements" done by removing cover that some quality perch used to live under :( .

Remind me why I by a rod licence ?.

Know where you are coming from Mark. I have had furious on-bank rows with these guys trying to make them see sense and only cut back what, with even the wildest imagination, could be construed as 'needed'

What really pee's me of is that when we pay our road fund licence, it seems that NOTHING will convince the people we pay it to that pot-holes NEED filling, or verge vegetation which renders some junctions positively dangerous NEEDS cutting back.

BUT...when we pay our angling licence, the people we pay THAT to go out of their way to do work that frequently patently does NOT need doing. These 'Once in a hundred year flood risk' excuses they real out are frankly pathetic.

Strange world, isn't it

Cheers, Dave.

It's pointless arguing with these guys on the bank. They usually have a work docket which is issued by a manager who may not even have seen the stretch but is simply working to a planned maintenance schedule.
The lads with the chainsaws and loppers are simply doing a days work.

If you want to have an input you need to know what work is scheduled, do your research, prepare your argument, make an appointment, put your suit on and argue your case in the office with the decision makers before the lads leave the depot.

At the EA there are different departments, due to recent years of floods the 'Flood Management' department has the biggest budget and they get to do pretty much what they want to justify their position.

Us anglers come somewhere just below the bottom of the list.

T'was ever thus.

Some serious education of the worst EA slash-'n'-burn bods is required. Whenever I think of the worst they can do, I think of the piece of water that held barbel of 9 (never less) through to 16-plus, which I caught in numbers in 2006/07, then haven't fished for two years since a clearance gang went through...

on a section on the colne, the EA removed a fallen birch tree, it had been there for about 8 years and caused no problem, they said it was about flood defence even though there was no danger, it was only small, it used direct the flow in a perfect pattern for barbel and chub creating a natural food spot, they used to hold up there, a dead cert for a fish in the summer.....after that, a dead swim alright.

The money used for this kind of work comes direct from the government through our taxes.
As far as I understand it our rod licence fees go to the EA Fisheries Section, as does another £30,000,000 from the government.
If every angler in the country took action against this behaviour by not buying a licence, it would still happen. The Fisheries Dept. might be lost though.

Wakey Wakey rise and shine....surely no one is so stupid to think that if everyone brought a EA rod licence that things would improve???????....Its a tax that gets stuffed into the government coffers and has been for years..If you think about it logically if every angler paid for the EA licence thats alot of money..Where does all this revenue go?..Because its certainly not spent on improving our rivers..In the next few years due to our country along with others being in dire financial **** do you really think your rod licence money is going to be spent on improving our waterways?????....Think again...;)

Does anyone actually realise that part of your licence money was used to conduct studys on otter reintroduction?..Before they were reintroduced!!!...Its a complete sham and i would urge everyone not to buy another EA licence again..The tories are even considering scrapping it...The fact is due to more and more cut backs due to the state of our financial problems in this country, hardly any financial resources are going to be given to the EA..So i guess its down to yourselfs if you want to continue believing your licence money is going to improve our waterway..

Yeah right, let's not pay a licence (or we could scrap the EA and then have to pay a bomb for what we're getting now plus get a non-existent service on a new set of waters - the less glitzy and unfashionable, those not wanted by the smart money), let's throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Tree shredders, chain saws, stc, cost a lot of money, to buy & maintain,
Thats without the wages of the numpties who use them, and what about the wages of the { - unprintable - } who do the planning sitting in their nice offices.

But just think of the peace and quiet you can have without all those bloody birds chirping all day on their perches, plus you'll be able to see all those cute cuddly Otters chomping on the last few Barbel much more clearly.

Always look on the bright side of life .... da da,,,, da da....dadadadada. :(

Excellent idea mr boote about scrapping the EA..More and more anglers are waking up and seeing the EA for exactly what they are..(waste of money and complete waste of time)..Im sure someone as clever as yourself mr boote realised this along time ago..After all youve coverd the whole continent over the years and now were lucky you share your sentiments and thoughts with us humble folk here on bfw..:D:D:D

And you were only telling us the other day, Craig, that you had been banned from lots of conservationist-type sites. Cool it, fella, you're running on hot and doing Angling no good whatsoever.

Think youve got me mistaken for someone else paul..im not banned from anywhere my friend..But you must admit paul dont you think were being taken for mugs by the government and EA..Because lets be honest they certainly aint putting all the licence fees towards improvement..

Whoever it was, Craig, you should not be so quick to diss people merely because they happen not to think the same way as you. Debate, yes. Silly posturing bordering on two-up rudeness, no.

Paul..just like your good self im also entitled to my own opinion..I actually enjoy reading some of the things you write and indeed are well written..Unfortunately paul you show utter contempt to any one who has a different view to your goodself..And you certainly dont debate you just try too belittle people with clever comments..Ive no dowt your well educated and indeed know how to speak and write the correct grammer as the good queen herself intended..so instead of trying too belittle people why dont you actually try to do as you say you do..(debate)...p.s...feel free to paste any comments made by myself or others saying im banned off "ANY" sites..;);)

Is it any wonder, however, that this flood defence vandalism continues when angling does so little to represent its needs. What happened to all the anglers consultative councils once set up to advise the Agency?.... most of them went down they drain, as nobody wanted to sit on them.

Not merely running on hot, Craig, but clearly trying to turn back a tide - or, alternatively, to wipe out a way of modern thinking - that you and others like you now cannot stop - at least without destroying the pastime you profess to love. Sorry, but...

And you were only telling us the other day, Craig, that you had been banned from lots of conservationist-type sites.

Twas me Paul but I hasten to add, not for being rude, merely asking uncomfortable questions and believe it or not the questions were worded extremely politely, not blunt, abrupt or even too provocative.

What gets me is when Anglers blame otters ,mink ,cray fish.....its not them to blame ....its the people who put them there !

I love winding them up on Facebook ect..

Paul
