Reel choice

Wayne Williams

Senior Member
Hello,
I have 2 pair of reels and was wondering which pair to get rid of, they are both Shimano,
4000oc’s and the 3500b’s.
Any opinions gratefully appreciated.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers Joe,
My main rivers will be the Ribble (not in flood) , Goyt and the Mersey and possibly the Tame. The rods they will be used on are a set of Peregrine 12’ GTX 1.75’s + 11’ Harrison 1.75 and a 10’ 1.75

Being an owner of both reels Wayne you should know that they really are different animals. Both are excellent in what they do!
and as Joe rightly pointed out if you have to drop a set then drop the set your least likely to use.
the 3500b is a heavy monster and I personally wouldn’t want to couple it up to anything lighter than a 2.25 power rod. They feel way over weight on lighter barbel rods.
same the other way on. A 4000oc is going to feel too light and almost pathetic on a powerful flood rod. Perfect however on Avon and lighter barbel rods up to 1.75
An easy way to think of it really is to say the 4000 is a modern 4000 and the 3500b is really the equivalent to a modern 6000.

Yep keep the OC’s
The 3500bs are definitely going to bring in the best return. Fine examples are worth twice and more over what a used OC will fetch.
however......... think carefully before you do get shot. They won’t be easy or cheap to get back.

Wayne,
Unless you are absolutely strapped for cash, box up the 3500b’s and put them at the back of the wardrobe. In three or four years time you’ll have a really nice surprise like Edward had recently 😀

Or you could splash out on some Diawa Castizm Feeder reels (if you're ok with QD only) or the even more expensive Baitrunner version . . .saw a chap fishing with a pair on the bank paired with Hi-S barbel rods on the penultimate day of the season - the pairing was beautiful; pure rod n reel porn . . .

Mind you, he blanked - I didn't . . using 25yr old 5010 GT's and Korum Barbel rods . .! (he probably wasn't using combi rigs either - joking!)
