Reasons for Barbel population decline

I admit in certain areas they have declined but in some places the fish have moved. Theire are swims on the Upper Trent which were really productive a few years ago which throw up nothing now. Walk 400 yards either up or downstream and there they are. I don't know why this should happen as its not exactly pressurised angling.
