Hi any body used one of these pins. With the side cast facility are they worth ago and does any body know of similar design

I'm sure ray will be along in a moment to say it's a wonderful reel, go and buy 2.
i say, it's very good for rolling meat.

I nearly bought a mkI off eBay a couple of weeks ago. I've seen a mates and it's a very nice bit of kit, however I'd probably have to sell one of the kids before I could afford one. Shakespeare do one with a similar mechanism, but it looks cheap and nasty by comparison.

The earliest reference I can find for manufacture is this one.

In 1880 the firm of Malloch, in Scotland, introduced the first turntable reel, which had one side of the spool open. During casting, the reel was turned 90º, bringing it in line with rod guides, so that the line slipped easily off the end of the spool. For line recovery, the spool was turned back 90º.

Bit more history here if anyone interested

I picked one up new for ~£140 from ebay and enjoyed using it very much for the brief time I had it before all my gear got nicked. Grrr.

I was all covered on the insurance, but I've not bought another one yet - still holding out for a bargain!

I've got the rolling pin, and like the guys say, if you can't wallis cast, just spin the pin, cast overhead like a regular fixed spool and spin it back, works like a treat and I find it actually casts better as there is less resistance for the line coming of the reel/pin....

Would definitely recommend one...
