Progressive or Through action. In need of some advice

im quite stunned at the amount of people that feel undergunned with the 1.5 greys , personally i class them as a bit of a poker

granted mine are the specimens , but im convinced they are the same as the barbel , anyways, im very confident in using them in all but the most severe flood that i very rarely use the 2lb tip and ive took a couple of good uns on them

compare them to the drennan barbel rods and they are 2 completley different animals

I have started using the greys 3 piece 1.5lb test curve rod this season having broken my old fox rod after years of faithful service. I have been lucky enough to catch a couple of doubles on the new rod and I have been alarmed at how soft it seems compared with my old rod. I fish a small snaggy river and my heart has been in my mouth when trying to stop fish from reaching the sanctuary of overhanging trees etc. I feel as if there is nothing in reserve when a fish really gets its head down. I am now thinking of one of the 1.75lb torrix rods - just need to work out how to order one and arrange delivery without the wife knowing!

Maybe I'm wrong but it appears many buy a rod without giving it a good play around with first, though not a foolproof method, it would of highlighted the lack of backbone power many complain about regards their choice of rod.
Simply get a worker from your chosen shop to hold the tip eye (guide) of the rod and merrily bend the rod til you're satisfied that you've got a feel for its action, simple really.;);):)

And if buying blind online and the rod is not as you'd expected, simply return it in its original packaging, unmarked etc (again best to do the rod bending indoors rather than at waters edge) and the seller despite what many may say, IS legally obliged to refund both the purchase cost plus p & p of the vendor.
All the buyer is liable for is the return delivery cost.

my local tackle shop owner always does this out of routine, he's good at what he does, selling stuff.:)
the last time i got a rod off him, he did this, i thought, no!, your mad, go on, he said, put some weight on it....

Sorry not trying to be disrespectful . I dont think you can get the true feel of a rod and what it is capable of :( or not what it is capable of in a shop .I think until you hook a large lump and it is trying to run to a snag . Only then will you know how the rod will behave . Or if you have been told by some one you trust . I started this thread by saying that I had Greys 1.5 tc rod and I know how soft it is which is fine in open water and I had never bumped of a fish of using it . Since using my new fox Dou-lite Barbel xtra 1.75 I keep bumping fish of . I am of to the Teme this w/end and I will be using it . Will have to see how it behaves and if I keep bumping fish of

that's very true, but how many shops have a lake or river you can try one out.

I used to have a range of Greys rods. I had a 1.25/1.75 Prodigy Specialist/Specimen (can't remember what it was called) and it was a complete poker; even the 1.25 tip.

I also had a 1.5 Prodigy Barbel & a 1.75 Prodigy Barbel and both were superb - lovely & soft (I prefer softer rods).

But, some scroat nicked everything from my garage.

On the plus side, it meant I had a load of cash to buy new rods, so I bought a couple of BFW i-Power twin tips. I tried the Torrix, but I found them too stiff (I prefer softer rods).

I reckon you've just got to be prepared to put more bend into softer rods - right down to the handle!

I am not alone in saying i would be very surprised of the problem was the rod.
imo the problem here is that your tried, tested, and trusted rigs and hooks etc were all found using your old rod, which will apply pressure to the fish in a different way. If you tinker with hooklink length and hook size/pattern (suggest wide gape if you are bumping off) you will find a combo that works just as well in a short period of time. Just slightly different thats all.
I would also be surprised if the fish were not partly to blame as it does sound as if the hook hold is very light to bump of on the take. sounds like there not really having it to me. smaller bait? when a barbel takes a bait properly you really could land it on a scaffolding pole.

Steve (Reed) you can have a play/fish with mine on the 21st to see if you like it.
