Pin advice

I had a 4” SL and got rid of it. I have the line coming off the top of the spool on my reels and it was forever catching on the lever! Only other bit I didn’t like so much was the perforated back plate. It didn’t feel very comfortable to hold, especially on colder days. I’ve now gone and added a 4” Hardy Conquest to my collection with the same ratchet lever position 😱 I tried changing it to have line off the bottom (cue @Ian Woods with a comment here!) but it was just too weird.

The jury is out whether I’ll still have it in January!! I actually think I prefer the old school conquest I have, although I wouldn’t use it for barbel!
Honest question, how do you Wallis cast with line off the top?

Precious indeed. Third from the right and second picture: a 1915 Aerial?

I still regularly beat myself up for not ordering one for my fortieth B’day when they were a mere £325.00

Haydn, my old son, you are a muppet of the highest order!

Left to right ...scotton long trotter 4.25 inch, spitfire 4inch, 1915 copy 4inch, floatmaster 4.25inch, and the reel below is a floatmaster SU 4.5inch.

First session with the SU floatmaster, 11lb 9 ounces....

Hi Daniel,

Thanks, it’s a good question: the main elements are the same, but once you’ve done the simultaneous-ish pull with the left hand while releasing the lead (olivette in my case) and flicking the rod out, you have to quite quickly bring your left hand round level with where the line is exiting the spool.

Does that make sense? It should end up looking something like this…

Yeah gotcha, I’ve always had the line coming off the bottom which is why I couldn’t quite figure out doing a wally with line off the top. No rights or wrongs just what you’re used to or feels right.

Hi Ian, how does the float master suncompare to normal float master? Just thicker line lay? Thanks

Hello HZ, yea, the only real differences noticeable are thicker line lays, and the plates may be fractionally thicker also.
thanks Ian, I try to understand the difference between Chris reel. Seems like the 1915 Avon and float master/su are all around reels, suitable for both trotting and ledgering works.

Ps, that 39 aerial is really nice, maybe the best reel Chris ever made.

The spitfire is a little beauty, Chris told me it was like a little tank lol.
It's nice to use, and does feel very solid. I remember getting it, after a 5yr wait, and taking it out the next day to christen it. I had a great session with it and had quite a number of decent barbel, plus good chub, dace etc...

Wondering how long you’ve spend in total to wait for these reels.

I saw a spirtfire in fresh today, a piece of art , brand new but RHW, I played with it a bit, feels really solid, but the reel doesn’t spin as freely as I would expect, guess it needs a bit of running in. Really wish I could afford one.

If you were after one I think you would have to keep your eyes open for a second hand one as Chris limited them to 100 pieces and he's done the 100 now. No doubt they will come up for sale in new condition as a lot of the people who buy them don't actualy use them.
Was the one you had a play with the one sold on ebay recently? If it was it didn't fetch as much as people thought it would, I imagine that was because it was a right hand wind.
If i'm honest I much prefer the other lythe reels myself.

Yes, that’s the one, think it is still a bargain even it is right hand.

If I can have one reel from Chris, I think it will be the floatmaster su in 4.25inch. Although I also like the Scotton trotter and 1915 Avon… still dreaming of them. Spirtfire is a bit small for trotting imo.
