Hi Guys,
Will the ever spiralling costs of fuel dictate how far or how many trips you will make this season? 20 years ago I would sometimes clock up 200 miles a week travelling to and from the rivers Severn and Teme, I wouldn't contemplate that now. At that time I would share costs with a mate ( I had one then! ) and that is one solution. The obvious alternative is to fish nearer home ( the Warwickshire Avon in my case ). The fuel costs made me examine the potential of the Avon and made me realise just how much 'intresting' water was available.

I won't be putting in as many short sessions on a reasonably distant river this year. If all I've got is a few hours then I'll be travelling a couple of miles to a still water and fishing for whatever is in there. I'll also not be banging my head against a brick wall in unfavourable river conditions.
 
My own business is down about 20% over the last 12 months and this has made me really think about my fishing costs. I've dropped a couple of syndicates where i was paying silly money to fish once or twice a year. The days of doing 100s of miles for a bit of fishing on a weekly basis have long gone when you drive a 20mpg van lol. I am lucky that i live only 4 miles from a decent stretch of the middle Severn and the Teme isnt a million miles away but i would really have to think about the cost's of say trips down to the Ouse or Kennet on a really regular basis unless i could share the costs a bit.
 
Unlike some of you I dion't do short sessions a long way off. If I'm going a long way for my fishing it's either an all day stint until dark or longer if possible or an overnight stay somewhere. I'm quite lucky as I only travel on average about 30 miles for my fishing.
 
i'm trying to find a local club that dosn't suffer from pikys and chavs, i'm still looking.
but on the other hand, my car dos 50mpg, i'm just tight...lol
 
it certainly makes you think twice about where you're going that's for sure..
i was going over to the wye 2 maybe 3 times a week a couple of seasons ago, add the severn bridge fee of £5.50 per trip to maybe 250 miles a week then your fishing starts to work out expensive...
will be more of a home bird this season, will still go over now and again but will pick and choose when....
 
Not too bad for me 40 mile round trip to the middle severn for me but i drive a 4+4 and juice is a nightmare at moment thinking of changing it if things dont improve .Fingers cross i be working close to home so i can pop after work for 3/4 hrs but i dont think i travelling miles again this year as i got some good fishing close to home. Might even ask Jez and Steve if i can sleep over few nights a week things get to bad lol

If i am going down the Trent a round trip is 100 miles ish. Luckily my car does a good 55mpg. However i am not as flush as i used to be, so i will travel less and fish for longer sessions. That way i should catch more for less, a bit like Asda price...
 
4 years ago bought my house 50 yards from the bank of the River Ribble.Saves a fortune on the petrol but the down side is the price of house insurance living on the flood plain,can't win these days:(
