Perch Set up

Hey folks

Right I’m going to renew my quest for perch this year.

I’ve tried the whole lure / drop shoot thing whilst effective I just don’t jel with it I want to ledger and float for them.

Can I have some opinions on a float rod and ledger rod for this ? And some reel options.

It’s not complicated.

For stillwaters:

Any sensible light/med 12-13ft float rod will be fine. Then either waggler fish maggots on fairly light gear or for a more ‘specialist’ approach fish worm or a prawn.

For bottom fishing; a simple running feeder and again worm, prawn or maggot. Hooklinks/hooks to suit. I find perch are one of the few fish that don’t suit bolt rigs - so free running low resistance rigs seem to work better. A 1lb- 1.25 test bendy rod would be fine.

If rules (and pike) allow; perhaps the most instant method is a small livebait. Again on a free swimming float or a light leger rig.

Reels - any 3000/4000 size would do the job. A fighting drag (or a baitrunner) might help with the legering.

As Tim said, it's not complicated.

For my better perch, a 1.25 Avon rod, chubber 3 ssg float, size 6 hook for lip hooked bleak.

Shotting 9 inches from hook, fish it 3/4 depth.

Try get some bait fish in area by putting in 12 or so red mags over the top every few mins.


As Tim says re reel and rod for float, I tend to lay on with light float after putting handful mags, and 6 or so broken up prawns in the swim. Use whole large peeled prawn on size 6 hook, hooked across bait not in line.

Thank you gents so don’t go for a light feeder style on quiver ? More an Avon pointed at bait on buzzer ?

Float rod was thinking something like the 12/13 Drennan plus

I’ve got my chub rod now but that’s my special occasion rod lol

But do have a hi-s small Water that I could use for ledgering for perch if suitable

Those rods sound too good to me !

They would be fine, of course. Contrast with my 45 quid second hand 13ft Daiwa Harrier and 25 year old Tony Fordham carbon Kevlar 1lb rods !

The bobbin leger set up suits the prawn /worm baits. I might use a quiver if I was feeder fishing maggots - but I prefer waggler fishing them (in winter).

If your going to use a live bait and there is even a slim chance of pike, please use wire and strike early.

Are you intending to fish rivers?

I personally targeted Perch on the Severn last autumn/winter with lobworms, taking fish to 3.15lb.

My preferred setup is a Drennan Acolyte Plus 15ft rod and centrepin loaded with Silstar Team line in 6.6lb. I use overshotted Avon floats (between 3AA and 6AA) with the bulk shot on the deck, so that I can lay on. Hooklength is 5.5lb of the same line, attached with a Drennan quick snap swivel And Kamasan B983 hook in size 8 or 6. The great thing about the Drennan snap swivels, is you make up another hooklength, with a small bait dropper attached to it

Theres a lot been written about Perch and resistance, but trust me the crudeness of having up to 8 or 9AA on the dec is not an issue. The float tends to tremble, bob up and then sail away

If I want to use a tip rod, I use an 11ft Drennan Ultralight Bomb rod, with the 1oz tip section fitted. 6lb Drennan camo line on a Daiwa Ninja Match 2508A reel and again, same hooklength and hook as on the float rod. Another rod option is the 11ft Drennan Acolyte Ultra feeder rod. I also bought a 1oz tip for mine.

Rivers for sure, mainly my target is some nice rivers I know have access to. The bomb rods Are hard to find now which is a shame. I looked at the Drennan ultralight feeder looks a good offering.

The acolyte ultra is similar to the bomb rod in action with the 1oz tip fitted.
