Pegging an access rope on the Severn

Dog spikes are fine. I have used mine of some very steep River Wye banks for a good numberbof years , and never ever had a problem. So long as you screw them in far enough.

Sometimes when you are using them to actually pull yourself up instead of just to steady yourself they will bend a bit but that is all. I screw mine in almost up to the triangular top.

Dog spikes work fine, provided you screw them all the way in, might be a bit difficult at present with the ground being baked hard!

Another tip worth thinking about is to knot the rope at intervals, helps to get a grip when it's wet and slippery.

Last tip, for when it finally rains again and the bank is really slippery, get some crampons to fit over your boots, life saver!
