Otters.....man to sue EA

Interesting bit in the papers today. (the Mail Richard i'm afraid :p)

Chap in Bangor is to sue the EA for setting up an Otter Haven a few miles from his fishery stocked with 22,000 carp. They have all now been eaten apparently.

Be interesting how this pans out

Well, i really hope he wins. He does to be fair have a good case like many other fisherie owners who are powerless whilst these Murdering things roam about unchecked.
Several questions could be asked in court, such as..
Why was NO ecological surveys carried out on fish stocks?
Why were they released knowing full well their natural food supply ( EELS ) were in decline?
The list could go on and on..In a nutshell the EA and other groups have made a terrible mistake and they wont admit it. They would rather portray the Otter as a friendly creature on various TV programs which we all know is bias and not telling the full truth..
I bet the EA are very nervous about this because alot of facts they choose to hide will come out in court and with abit of luck this court case could begin a change in peoples attitudes.
Fingers crossed..;)

on the other hand, if the owner has so much money tied up in carp as a living then why didn't he spend a few grand on a decent fence???????????????????????????????????????

this article points out all you need to know about the ea surreptisouly introducing otters into unsustainable environments.i hope he wins and sues the b***s of them. but on the other hand we'll end up paying the costs!!

Could have been mink or more likely they died of natural causes and were eaten by rats....;)

Seriously, good luck to the chap. If he did manage to win it would be a landmark case indeed.

8.500 carp in one lake?

Looking at the pictures in the story these lakes look very small!

Why would anyone put that amount of carp in a lake, unless it was one big lake?

Something doesn't smell right to me.

Also you'd think you'd notice 22,000 carp going missing over time, doesn't say when he stocked it, but netting it in 2008 thinking there's 8,500 in there and finding nothing, did he or anyone ever go down there or fish it? It'll be interesting to see the outcome of this, think he might struggle to win.

As you say Rhys, surely someone must have noticed scales, carcasses, or some sign of predation.

Something distinctly fishy about this case, pardon the pun:rolleyes:

If the guy is bankrupt, over the otter issue, how can the fishery owner afford this sort of litigation? Hope he wins - we should contribute to his fighting fund. The otter fraternity need to be aware of their reckless behaviour, be prepared to put their hands in their pockets and be prepared to pay compensation for their indulgence. If wolves were surrepticiously introduced, and farmers lost flocks of sheep there would be lawsuits aplenty. The story is also covered in the Daily Telegraph plus the pensioner who made a mess of shooting a squirrel in a trap.

This is the sort of thing that boils my blood  As i've argued before Otters would be best left to propergate naturally that way they will fit in with the natural ecology of the area they've populated. We've seen the damage wreaked on rivers and fisheries where so called experts have released them, in far to higher numbers resulting in the carnage we've all seen.

But ! .... I smell a rat here

1) 8,500 Carp eaten by Otters - and thats just one of his 6 lakes - I don't think so ! Just how many Otters did the EA release ?
It would take 10 Otters feeding exclusivley on that lake let alone the other 5 nearly three years to chomp their way through that lot !

2) It's unlikley that the skeletons he found in the lake are Otter kills, i doubt that an Otter would eat Carp of that size in the water, they always drag a fish of that size out, and eat it on the bank.
Those skeletons look like they've been boiled ! in reality they've rotted down naturally, and not been stripped of flesh as he said.

It's obvious that he's had losses due to Otter predation, but i think to lose 8,500 fish - just from one lake, it's almost certain he's had a massive fish kill probably due to disease.
If he stocked 8,500 carp of the size shown by the skeletons in the photograph, and if the size of his lakes ... ponds ? - is typical of the photo's shown, it's no suprise that he lost his stock.

I think he's trying it on, or he's been very badly advised by his fish consultants, he's going to lose his case for sure, when the EA bring in their experts who will refute his claims probably along the lines of what i've just said.
That will likley be publicised, and will do no favours to anglings cause in the eyes of the public.
If i was him i'd withdraw the case, he'll likley end up with a whopping bill for legal costs - his own, and the EA's on top of what he's already lost.

Silly man !

Ian.

Yes Ian, I see your point about the amount of fish but as we all know, when food is plentiful, they will eat just the best bits (gills, brains etc) and leave the rest to rot. They will also kill for fun if food is so abundant..................and it clearly was!

Regards,

Jeff

If that is the case then Jeff why was it not obvious to anyone that these 22,000 fish were being taken? He said it wasn't until he netted the pool, which supposedly had 8,500 fish in, that he noticed them missing. Something doesn't quite add up. I think Ian probably hit the nail on the head and he's lost most of them some other way, probably due to over stocking!

Exactly. How do you one day have 22,000 carp and suddenly they've all gone? The otters would have to have been there in huge numbers, constantly taking fish 24/7. And nobody noticed??

If ever a case was doomed to failure it's this one, and, as Ian points out, will do the image of angling no good at all.
